The Speaker was there, but deserted the Doc- tor, without offering a word in defence of his friend, as soon as he found the opin- ions of the electors present to be decided- ly adverse to himself and Doctor Conroy, We have never, upon any eimilar occa- eion,in this Island, saw a greater con- course of people. There could not have been many less than 1000 persons pre- sent, gathered from the various sections ef the District, including al] the respect- able'snd influential voters; and out of that Vast multitude ‘not one individua) came forward to raise hig voice for Dr. Conroy 0" the party who back him. The speechifying, which lasted for several hours, was therefore altogether on the side of the Liberals.
