Srr,—One Henry Coombs, living somewhere in Caarlottetowa I presume, is again airin some imaginary grievance in the columns 0 the ‘‘new daily” —anything to fill it up. Every a:t must have a motive, so on inquiry I found out the moving power, the great exciting cause of Honry Coombs—ire and spite. Mr. Henry Coomba is a small trader in a remote part ol the towo, and wasin the habit of keeping a midiature lumber yard in front of his little plase, to the great inconvenience of the public, ani directly contrary to the city by-law or- dering ‘‘a!] the sidewalks to be kept clean.’ Mr. Henry Coombs was remongtrated with by @ very courteous and obliging policeman, and asked to shift his lumber yard further in; but Mr. Henry Coombe did not mind the law, and dsliberately aad with malice aforethought told the, gentle and kind policeman to ‘‘go to blazés,” Just fancy that, sir, What an irre- parable loss the city would sustain if ‘the pair of blues” had to go where fe ordered! If I mistake not, the exact words were a trifle hot- ter and stronger; a little more peppery in their true wording. Be this as it may, Mr. Henry Coombs was fined by the Stipendiary Magis- trate $1.60 for his continued wilful neglect and

resistance in obstructing the sidewalk. An other time I believe his cow—his own cow— got into pound. So his cup of wrath was full to overflowing, as we seein the paper. Poor Henry! hs was the public man and cries *‘Dan- ger sheadw’ § There is no ‘‘danger ahead” ex eept the wilful law breakers. The public can take Mr. Henry Coombs’ case for an example.

A CoNSIDERABLE amount of snow fighting was experienced by the trains yesterday. Nevertheless they arrived in this city on very good time.

Fire at ALBerton.—We regret to learn that thedwelling houseof J. F. White, Esq. ,‘he obliging Collector of Customs at Alberton, was consumed by fire this forenoon. The furniture, etc., was saved. Cause of the fre is unknown.

Our attention has been called to the filthy condition of the visitors’ seats in the Supreme Court. The floor and back of the seats for a considerable height is thickly coated with tobacco spits and plugs. A visitor remaining in the seats for only a short time is almost stifled by the unwhole- some smell which rises from the floor at that part. It is impossible for the Keeper of the building to keep the place cleared. We suggest that those who cause such a dis- graceful state of affairs be arrested under the Nuisance Act.

Darixc Arremtr to Ros.—An_over- grown lad, named Daniel McDonald, was arragned before the Stipendiary Magistrate this morning, charged with assaulting Miss Fanny Mawley, with intent to rob. OUR OTTAWA DESPATCH.

Orrawa, Feb. 12. The debate on the Governor General’s Address began yesterday. Sir John opened it in a speech of sparkling wit. In elegant vigor he denounced the O’ Donaghue amnesty

Government. The Governmént, he says, had voted down the O'Donoghue amnesty in Parliament, and ina few months after, in order to gain a seat, granted it. McKenzie replied, and Masson followed in an exhaustive exposition of the reasons that caused the great Conservative re- action in Quebec.

Laurier, Langevin and others followed. Laflamme claimed credit that the Grits by uncurring taxation, had given protec tion to home industry.

The debate continues to-day, and Tupper will shortly speak.
