The Deacon's Dog.

A good story is told of the presence |

of mind of a New Hampshire deacon who was very fond of dogs. He had one valuable setter that he had trained him- self, and that understood his very word and slightest gesture with an almost humana intelligence.

One evening at a prayer meeting the good man was offering an earnest exhor tation and the people sat with bowed heads, giving earnest attention. The audience faced the stand where sat the pastor ; the doors opened on either side. All at once one of the doors, which had been left ajar,was pushed opea and the handsome head of the deacon’s favourite seiter was thrust in. The head was followed by the body, and the dog in toto had just started with a joyful hound towards its master.

The deacon generally knew what was going on about him, whether he was praying or shooting, and the first movement of the intruder attracted his attention. Quick asa flash the deacon, raisiog bis hand with a waroing gesture, exclaimed :—*Thou hast given us our charge; help us to keep eee empasized word so wellknown to his canine ear, the handsome brute stoppoa, asifshot,onthe very treshold of the door, with his intelligent eye fixed on his master.

In the same unmovel tone, with a slight wave of the extended hand :— ‘we would not return back to Thee with our duty on ex ti untu tilled;” Again the perfect training of the deacon’s pet was mad evident, for without ia whim- per he turned as noiselessly as he had

Explosion of a Meteor.

Officers of the steamship Evyptian Monarch, which teft London Feb 7, and which arrived at New York on the 26th,report very heavy gales. For more than a week the hatches were battened down andthe scared passengers kept below. “On the second day out,” said the third officer, “I was on watch at 10.30 o’elock, p. m. Iwas standing on the bridge. The night was very dark, a heavy yale was blowing, and the atmosphere was charged with elec- tricity. Icould feel it in my bones. Suddedly there was a large report, like that of a 68-pounder, and a meteor ex- ploded just above the bridge. 1 receiv- ed a violent electric shock,and then I fele as if I had been knocked into a corner under a feather bed, and couid not breathe. The shock knocked the helmsman away trom the wheel, and

when it had passed the place smelled of

brimstone tor over five minutes, The air seemed fullof brimstone. Some of the sailors say that they saw a red ball above the mainmast just before the meteor exploded, and when it did ex- plode forks of fire leaped ia every direc- tion. ———_p <)> ——

Jay-Eye-See in Double Harness.

Oo Thursday the famous little trotter, Jay-Eye-See, was hitched tothe pole with Ellen Sprague and driven about Racine by Edwin Bither. It is the first time the animal has been in harness since last fall. No person tolook at the horse as he was being driven along on that day would imagine that he was the fastest in the worlé. He is a very smal! and inferior looking animal ata distance, but upon close inspection the fine points can be seen ata glance. Bither says the wonder is in perfect health and con- dition. Next seuson, if everything is right be will drive Jay-Eye See one mile in jess than 2.10. One gentleman who stood on the street and observed Bither drive by with the team, wanted to know “what little plug that was on the left hand side.” tle was almost paral yzed when informed that he could not purchase that plug for $100,000 and that it was Jay-Eye-See.—JM- waukee Sentinel.

Pope Leo’s Beneficence.

Twelve thousand francs were given receatly by His Holiness for 150 hos- pital beds for the poor, Last year he gave 32,000 francs fora similar pur- pose. On the anniversary of his cor- onation he distributed 10,000 franes among the poor. He gave 20,000 to the relatives of the victims of the earth- quakes at Casamiccioli. Last September he donated another 10,000 to the poor. Besides these sums he gives almost weekly thousands and thousands to bishops, to seminaries, to ayslums and to benevolent institutions all over the world. Leo XIII. gives away more than King Humbert, and does not touch « penny of the 3,000,000 annually set apart tur him io the Italian budget.
