This i: emphatically an age of vast undertakings. During the last quarter of a century, or since the foundation of our own magnificent bridge were laid, enterprise has succeeded enterprise on & scale and with a rapidity at which, if foretold to them, our fathers would have raised their hands in ineredulity. The first Atlantic cable was only the inau- guration of a movement which should embrace tlie globe; the Panama rail- road, which spanned the isthmus of Darien, was followed by aline which crossed the American hemisphere at its broadest part; the Suez canal showed that nething was beyond the power of modern engineering skill ; and of late, bridges, tunnels, mountain railways, &e., compared with which the seven wonders of antiquity would be mere toys, have made the world so familiar with daring achemes that Jules Verne’s passage to the moon might almost seem within reach of possibility. The arrangements for the Panama canal have only been completed when word reaches us that the Baltic is to be join- od to the North Sea by aship canal from Kiel tu the mouth of the Elbe. Accord- ing to the plans of the engineer, Herr Dahistom, the depth will be 20 feet 9 inches ; the width, 160 feet at the sur- face and 64 feet at the bettom. A eon- trivance has been invented by which this depth can be increased if necessary, to 25 or 20 feet. itis calculated that the cost will be about $19,000,000, and that the work will be completed ia six years. According to the returns issued the gross produce of the revenue of the United Kingdom for the year ending March 31, 1880, was £81,265,055, which shows a net decrease of £1,850,917 com- pared with tho previeus year, when the gross revenue was £83,115,972. For the quarter just ended, the reeeipts were £27,118,226, against £28,520,188 in the corresponding quarter of last year, thus showing a decrease on the quarter of £1- 401,962. The items in which there have been increases in the quarter just com- pleted are stamps £630,000, property

NEALED TENDERS addressed to the s undersigned (Secretary of Railways and Canals) and endorsed ‘Tender for Lock Gates, Lachine Canal,” will be received at this office until the arrival of the Eastern and Western Mails on THURSDAY, the 3rd day of JUNE next, for the construction of gates, and the necessary machinery connected with them, for the new locks on the Lachine Canal.

Plans, Specifications and General Condi- tions ean be seen at this office on and after THURSDAY, the 20th day of MAY next, where forms of tender can also be obtained.

Parties tendering are expected to provide the special tools necessary for, and to havea practical knowledge of, works of this class, and are requested to bear in mind that ten- ders will not be considered unless made strictly in accordance with the printed forms, and— in the case of firms—exvept there are at- tached the actual signatures, the nature of the occupation and residence of each member of the same; and, further, an accepted bank cheque for a sum equal to $250, for the gates of each lock, must accompany each tender, which sum shall be forfeited if the party ten- dering declines entering into contract for the work at the rates andon the terms stated in ithe offer submitted.

The cheque thus sent in will be returned to the respective partics whose tenders are not accepted.

For the due fulfilment of the contract the party or parties whose tender it is proposed to accept will be notified that their tender is aceepted, subject to a deposit of Jive per cent. of the bulk sum of the contract—of which the sum sent in with the tender will be con- sidered a part—to be deposited to the credit of the Receiver General within cight days after the date of the notice.
