MonrreaL, Sept. 5.—The prohibition commission opened here to-day. Judge Dugas, police magistrate, and Lt. David, city clerk, being examined. Both these gentlemen held that from eighty to ninety per cent. of the crime resulted from the abuse of intexicating liquors. They be- lieved, however, that prohibition will not work, and advocated light fines and heavy licenses.

Hairax, Sept. 9.—Consul Tobin has received an oftizial enquiry from Copen- hagen asking if immigraats from Denmark, Norway and Sweden would be quarantined at Halifax, and stating that these countries were absolutely free trom cholera. Consul Tobin, after consultirg with the port officer, rep'ied that immigrants from these couatries would not be quarantined. It is thought that the managers of lines running from these c untries to New York propose to come to Halifax and land their pas- seogers and thus save the time and ex- pense now incurred by the stringent quar- antine regulations at New York,
