Modern Artillery Improvements.

A side-splitting incident oecurred a a novel experiment at Woolwich, Eng land.

It was wt one time proposed to fire muotain guos off the backs of mules that carried them. It was urged that this would obviate the necessity of dis- mounting the gua from tho roule’s back and mounting it on its carriage; A mounting battery could thus come into action in far less time. This proposal was warmly taken up by the committe, who forthwith proceeded to test ite feasibility.

A mule or dunkey was procured, and a small gun strapped firmly to a cradle resting on the back-saddle, so that the muzzle of the weapon pointed over the donkey’s tail. The animal, so the story goes, was then ied into the marshes at Woolwich, accompanied by the com- mittee and several “big wigs,” who were attracted by such a novel experi- ment.

On arrival at the butt, the gun was loaded, the donkey turned with his tail toward the earthern mound, and the usuel preparations made for firiog by means of a lanyard and friction tube. Hicreupon one of the committee re- marked that this mode of firing might possibly derange the aim by the jerk on pulling the lanyard.

A diseussien followed, and it was finally arranged to firethe gun by a piece of slow maich tied to the vent. This was accordingly done, and the match duly ignited. Hitherto the don- key bad taken rather a sleepy interest in the proceedings, bat, somehow, the fizzing of the match on his back caused him first to prick up his ears, then to lay them back, and finally to begin to turn round. The committes were thunder-struck, and “‘skedaddied” in all directions ; the secretary threw himself flat on hir face ; there was a moment of agonizing suspense; then—bang—the shot went ricochetting away in one direction, while the wretched donkey tarned a complete somersault in the other.

The Nationalists’ Platform.

That the story of the $35,000 asked by Riel as the price of his selling the Metis’ cause is an infamous Orange hie.

That the three respites were nothing but a refinement of cruelty.

That Jackson was only acquitted be- cause he was protected by the Orange- men.

That Sir John wrote to Winnipeg to prepare the battalions to strike at the French Canadians.

That Riel was hung solely ia obe- dience to the Orangemen.
