The newly arrived English work- people at the Dundas, Ont., Cotton Mills had a bit of misunderstanding about wages, and struck work last Sat- urday, till it should be settled. They say they were promised $5 to $9 per week by the agent in Britain, and have only been getting $4.50 to $o.

Fifty poor orphan boys at a House of Refuge for the poor at Trieste res cently set upon the Saperintendent of the institution and killed him. A war- den who came to his assistance was wounded, and the police and Municipal Guard had to be called in to quell the disturbaace and march the boys off to prison.

In Lawrence, Mass., they are reduc- ing their civic expenses and have cut down the school salaries: the Princi- pal of the high school from $2,500 to $2000 ; to establish the salary of the superintendent at $2000; first-grade teachers from $550 to $500; seconds grade, $500 to $450; third-grade, $450 to $400.

The delights of sovereignity are il- lustrated in the announcement that Emperor William has pardoned out 600 prisoners whose crimes were “ of- fences against himself.’ It gives a suggestive vision of many others ready fora crime against the person of the Emperor who have not been caught and imprisoned,

The report from all parts of England are that the grain crops are backward, and in many districts thin and poor, and that vegetation is later than has been remembered for many years. The genial change in the weather has just set in, should it prove permanent, will soon, doubtless, repair much of the damage that has been done.

Two Jews, the first ever sent there, are in the Quebec prison of St. Vincent de Paul. The officials were at a loss how to provide for their spiritual wants and, says the Montreal Gazette, “ to settle the matler they were given the choice of embracing the Protestant or Roman Catholic faith. After a little consideration they decided to attend the former chapel.”
