The Navy of Japan.

The naval programme of Japan has received lately some modifications. The four first class cruisers will be of 9,200 tons each instead of 7,500, as first con- templated. Between this present time and 1406 Japan purposes to have the following war fleet:

Six ironclads, first class battleships, from 12,510 to 15,240 tons; 1 ironclad of second class and 7,335 tons, 6 pro- tected cruisers of 9,200 tons each, 7 sec- ond class cruisers of more than 4,000 tons, 6 third class erunisers of 3,000 sons, 12 cruisers of the fourth class and over 1,500 tons, 8 torpedo gunboats of 1,200 tons, 12 torpedo catchers, 115 torpedo boats, 25 gunboats, etc.

One of the first class cruisers will be built in Japan, one ironclad is already building in England, one first class cruiser has been ordered in France, and another in Germany. Two second class cruisers are building in America.

This programme has been laid out with a view to the opening of the Rus- sian Traussiberian railroad and to the Russian naval construction now pro- ceeding. —New York Sun.

From the instant the ball is in play the nervous strain is removed, and the con- stant action requires a sound wind and fectness of foot, but not the absolute free- dom and control of the muscles which are requisite for steady driving, or any- thing like the strain on the nerves which is kept up from the start to the finieh of a close encounter at golf.—H.
