Unfounded Reports.

Moncton, Aug. 15. | Reports have been in circulation in Bue- | touche and vicinity for some days in regard | to fights at sea between English and Yankee vessels to-day. Several inquiries recieved from Halifax, Montreal and other ports, in- dicating that some wag had sent the report abroad. The only foundation for the story is that a Frenchman ran to Buctouche from a fishing trip one day last week and told of a great fight at sea betwecn Yankee aud Enzlish warships. He had English had attempted the capture of a poacher, when the Yankee warship fired, the Englishman returned the com- plement, dismasting the Yankee and sink- ing her. Next day someone at Richibucto | Sent a dispateh to Sheriff Whelan who was |in Buctouche on official business, saying | thac the Yarkee crew had been captured | and that the jail was full, Nothing was {thought of the fun, bat the story appears to have been telegraphed around with sen- sational details.

Ministerial Movements. FREDERICTON, August 15.

Sir John and Lady McDonald, accom- panied by Sir Leonard and Lady Tilley, arrived here by special train from St. Andrews to-day, and proceeded at once to the Government House. Subsequently the Premier went to the City Hall, where an address was presented to him by the Com- mon Council. Sir John responded briefly, thanking them for their reception. The Premier will arrive in St. John on Wednes- day.

Newport, R. L., Aug. 15. The Volunteer won the $250 dollar cup for first class sloops, in the race from Vine- yard Haven to-day, beating the Puritan 7 minutes 14 seconds, corrected time, and the Mayflower 21 minutes 4 seconds. The Sachem won in the schvoner class.

The Fishing Fleet. Canso, Aug. 15- Several American fishermen passing through this port boend homeward report mackerel scarce outside the three mile limit, and the Nova Scotia fleet report fish equally scarce inshore, up to this time. A Denial. OrTawa, Aug. 15. The despatch which appeared in the New York papers this morning regarding the sinking of an American fishing vessel by a Canadian cruiser off Buctouche _ is officially denied.

A CORRESPON DENT interviewing Capt. Camp- bell,of the seiner Good Luck, owned by James E. Grant, Charlottetown, says that all mackerel are schooling inside the limits,and, if the cutters do their duty, there is no donit but the Americans will have to go without fares. He also says all the mackerel he took were in shore. If depending onjwhat was out- side of the limits he would not have taken a barrel. Capt. Campbell being an experienced seiner, having served about fifteen years in the American fleet, warns all blue backs to be on the look out.

| Wide Awake Opinion. Sir,—Some Grits, it would seem, have -abondoned the cry of **Free Trade,” and ‘gone in for Commercial Union. Leader Laurier, however, is not clear on either. The fact is he knows that the National Policy is here to stay, and that Commercial | Union, as talked by Mr. Wiman, of Dun |Wiman & Co., is impracticable. Free Trade means one thing; and Commercial | Union, with high protection United States, quite another thing altogether. It would be interesting to know what our Island | Grits are going to do about it. After all | | their loud talk about Free trade, are they now prepared to join hands with those who have adopted the highest protectionist policy of any nation in the world. I be- lieve they will be found to be at’ sixes and sevens on this question of Commercial Union, as they are on all other questions affecting the interests of the country.

GENTLEMEN,—With reference to the Heating Apparatus put into my house by you last fall, I would respectfully state that it has given very great satisfaction.

My house, as yon are aware, stands in an isolated and exposed situation, yet during the coldest weather the heat could be regulated to-any desirable temperature. My experi- ence leads me to believe that the hot water system of heating, as put in by you, is superior to all other forms of heating I have seen, in its saving of tuel and labor, simplicity of working, cleanliness, and safety from fire, and I hereby recommend it as being the most healthful, comfortable, safe and economical in use. I further wish to swe my satisfaction with the manner in which the work was done by you. Yours truly,
