Jumpep into tHe Wacon.—While Nelson Clark and wife were starting from Summer- side to drive home to Cape Traverse, one day last week, a horse just behind them took fright at a train near the station there, and jumped into Mr. Clark's waggon. Mrs, Clarke was thrown out, sustaining some injuries about the face, none, however, of a serious nature.

A Narrow Escare.—The Agriculturist re- ports that Lulu, the little five-year-old dauga- ter fof Mr. E,-H. Wright, of Summerside, while leaning over the bannister at the head of the stairs, cn Sunday night, 15 inst., lost her balance, and fella distance of thirteen feet, striking a sofa. Her escape from death was almost marvellous. She lay in a critical condition for three days, but is now fast re- covering.

SvccessrtL SurGicaL OpeRaTion.—A few weeks ago Dr. G. T. Smith, of this town, suc- cessfully removed a cataract from the eye of Mrs. William Smith, of Upper Coverdale. Mrs. Smith is a lady 86 years of age, and had been entirely blind for fully two years. She now rejoices at being able to see the light again, as well as to recognize those by whom she is surrounded. She can also, by the use ot a glass, take observations of her neighbors’ lands and buildings. —Moncton Times.

Onantes Wartts.—This celebrated orator is to lecture in St. John on Sunday next, on “Secularism.” He will speak in this city on Wednesday evening, July 4th, his subject being “Science, its Struggles and its Triumphs.” An invitation will be extended to the clergy to meet and reply to Mr. Watts, if they desire to do so. His lectures are most favorably commented upon. An ex- change says: *‘ In disccssion he is quiet, per- tinent, logical, and, above all, good-natured.” There is notin all,” he says ‘a touch of malice.”

Fourrn Battot—McKinley withdraws after Connecticut voting one for him. In- diana for the first time votes solid for Har- rison. Illinois gives Harrison 3; Gresham, 41. _New York gave Alger 3; Allison 1; Harrison 9; Sherman 1, and Blaine 8. Wis- consin voted Harrison 2}and Gresham 2. The result of the ballot was: Alger, 135; Harrison, 217; Allison, 88; Blaine, 42; Sherman, 236; Gresham, 98; McKinlay, 11; Lincoln, 1; Fred Douglas, 1; Foraker, 1.

Firra Battor.—Blaine 46, Sherman 224, Alger 142, McKinley 14, Allison 99, Harrison 213, Gresham 87. The announce- ment of the votes for Blaine and McKinley was greeted with applause. Recess to 4 p- m. ordered,

The correspondent of the World at Chicago says: ‘* At 1} o’clock I learn on authority which I consider absolutely un- questionable that Sherman's support is in consultation now, and if it is decided that he cannot be nominated, will throw every vote that it can control to Allison.

While the delegates were leaving the Hall Chauncey M. Depew, in the presence of a number of people, predicted that at four o'clock Blaine would be nominated by acclamation and the general consent of the friends of nearly every leading candidate.

At 4.07 p. m., Hiscock, of New York, said a mption was to be made to adjourn till Monday. Warner Miller said the understanding was to adjourn to 1 a. m., Monday.

At 5.17 p. m., a motion to adjourn was made. Kansas called fer the roll call. Iowa seconded it.

_At 5.30 p. m., the Convention adjourned till 11 a. m., Monday.

Montreal News.

Montreal, June 24.

A young woman named Blance Latulippe was burned to death in a house on Eliza- beth street Saturday night. It is supposed the tragedy was caused by the explosion of a coal oil lamp.

The operating room of the C. P. R. Tele- graph Company was almost destroyed by ire at an early hour this morning.

_ Judge Gill to-day granted J. M. Fortier, cigar maker, $150 damages from the Cana- dian Workman, for advising people not to buy cigars made by a ‘‘child beater” or ‘**woman spanker.” In two weeks For- tier’s sales had fallen off $6,000, but that might have been due to the labor investiga- tion. The damages claimed were $150,000.

Cumberland Election — Financial.

Orrawa, June 24.

The appointment of Hon. Mr. Royal as Lieut.-Governor of the Territories was made yesterday.

It is now understood that the announce- ment that the election in Cumberland would be held on the 10th prox. was premature, as the writ has not yet been issued.

Hon. Mr. Foster has returned from Montreal, where he has been negotiating for placing the proceeds of the new loan temporarily with the various loan banks.

A. Forget, Clerk of the North-west Council, succeeds to the position rendered vacant by Reed’s elevation.

Death of a Noted Man.

Provipence, R. I., June 24,

Hon. Rowland Gibson Hasaard died sud- denly this morning, aged 86. He was in his usual health a short time before his death. Mr. Haszard was noted as a Finan- cier, Literateur, Mathematician and Meta- physician. His name was known all over the civilized world.

Shot Dead.

Laxe Mecantic, June 24.

Lucius F. Warren, United States Deputy Marshal, was shot dead yesterday evening by a desperado named Donald Morrison, whom he was trying to arrest on a charge of arson. The people of the village are greatly excited as Morrison threatens to do more harm. A force is coming from Sher- brooke to arrest him.

Rev. J. H. Hogg preached his farewell sermon to an immense congregation to- night. He was presented with an addregs by the Sunday School this afteynnon and a purse of $300 will be presented to him to- night. ;

From the official market report of the Boston Chamber of Commerce, June 21, we extract the following :

Porators.—Receipts for the past six days 33,000 bu., previous six days 69,500 bu. The arrivals show a marked falling off this week, and the old stock on hand has been considerably reduced, but has been sold at very low prices asa rule. At the close there is a little better feeling, and some of the best hard domestic stock is held at 60c, with P. E. Island Chenangoes at 45 to b5c, as to quality,

Eaos.—Receipts for the week 11 boxes, 49 bbls., 9,704 cases; last week 17 boxes, 49 bbls., 10,126 cases. The arrivals con- tinue moderate, and all choice fresh. stock meets with a ready sale, with prices rang- ing from one-half to one cent higher than last week. Strictly extra eastern are scarce and bring full prices. P. E. Island, N. 8. and N. B. firsts are in good demand at 17c.
