Te steamer ‘ Edgar Stuart” arrived trom Halifax ai three o'clock this morning with freight and Mr. Angus Grant of Hawkesbury, aad Edmvad Doane of Halifax, as passengers. She sailed again at ten with a carge of 150 bbls. of pork anda quantity of hams shipped hy the Messrs. Wright and Rebert Bridges. The ‘‘ M. A. Starr” will probably arrive on the 29th ist.

A Larcesy.—An eld man named George Price made complaint at the Police Court a few days «go to the effect that eighty dollars in Bank notes were stolen frerm his trunk in the * Kailway Hlouse,” and summoned the proprietor of the house—Mr. John Bolger— m conne tion with the larceny. In Court this forev.0on he could not give any grounds for suspecting Mr. Bolger of the larceny, and the evidence uf Price was apparently stronger for his aciuittal than conviction. One thing is certai:, that Mr. Price lest his money. Who the thief is has yet to be cliscevered.

Messrs. Isaac Burpee and Charles W. A sericus fire occurred here last night about one mile away from the business por- tien of the town. The steam furniture factory, owned by Alexander McDonald, was burned: insurance only six hundred dollars. Also, the steam-cloth and _ grist- mill, ewned by Wm. Horn, completely des- troyed—-said to be no insurance. Total loss over $10,000.

Great interest is being taken in the trial of Oka Indians at Aylmer. A private des- patch this afternoon says the jury has dis- agreed and been discharged. Another trial has been begun, the jury being com-\ posed of twelve English Protestants.

In the House of Commons, Mr. Brigg’s motion was carried by a vete of 161 to 147, and the House again went into committee on the Compensation bill. Several motions to report progress were rejected.

Mr. Giadstone pointed out that every day the debate is prolonged prolongs the duration of the session, and now and again a motion to adjourn is preposed, and pre- gress was then reported.

The Stundard says: ‘‘ We have no reason te believe that when the proposed amend- ment of the £30 limit in the compensation bill is discussed, the Ministers will propese the substitution of the words ‘‘rateable value” for “rental.” This would increase the limit to about £42, the increase being the average difference between the two modes of estimating the value of Irish holdings.
