At a meeting or the P. ILI. Wom- enle Institute executive held yester- day afternoon at the rest room. with the president, Mrs. Herold Lain! prodding, it was announced that Miss Helen Wright or Monta- gue is the winner of the scholarship from the Jubilee amdcvwment Fund for the coming year.

Among the other matters of im- portance on the agenda was a re- port read by Mrs. Oscar MaoNeil1. convener of Arts and Literature of the Art Festival meeting which was held since the last meeting and also read the letter which is to be read at the W. I. Branch meetings.

Members checked the list of res- olution: and committees who have not already done so will present them to the proper authorities be- fore the next meeting. A note of appreciation is to he sent to the lilxhlbition Association for their kind co-operation during (nu Home Week and one to the Audubon Bo- clety for presenting their screen tour.

The prize list was completely re- vised for the I953 Exhibition. 'whiIh in the flriure will be known as Handicraft and Needlework Exhi- hition, It was thought advisable to add a ladies afternoon dress. a tail- ored blouse. and a childs sunsult to encourage more home sewing. This rug scction seemed quite sat- isfactory. It was suggested that members try to acquaint school thildren with the list of prizes given for school work, as more interest is desired in that section. A booklet will be issued before next year in which a standard for different kinds of cooking will be set.

Some features that should be list- ed in the Institutes News were dis- cussed, as news concerning A.C.- W. W.. F.W.I.C., consumer buying, Life Membership. Pins, etc.

The Misses Thelma Willis and June MacPhee, New Haven Food Club, one or the 4-H Clubs. gave a. demonstration on thrifty lzvuyintt and planning of attractive and nourishing meals. They then gave n. demonstration on how to prepare a Rural Youth salad while posters were shown. These girls have been chosen to represent the Island at the Royal Winter Fair competition at Toronto. Hon. C.C, Baker. Min- ister oi Agriculture was present for the demonstration, and also Miss Hazel Roland, nutritionist. who was the Judge at the Island competi- tlnn.

The President read the report or the matters concerning F'.W.I.C, News. The committee in charlze of the radio programs will hold a meeting in the near future.

Pioneer Figure In Broadcasting Dies In New York

NEW YORK. Oct. 1 - (AP) - Merlin H. Ayleswnrth. 86, a legend- ary figure in the early days of broadcasting and first president of the National Broadcasting Comp- any, died yesterday after a. long

s illness.

A public relations executive at the time, Aylesworth was 40 years old when he was chosen in 1926 to launch NBC as the first major radlo network in the United tates. He had no previous experience in radio and did not even own a set.

Two weeks after NBC was form- ally organized ior business, he put its premier broadcast on the air over 24 stations.

That broadcast included Will Rogers, Mary Garden, Dr, Walter Damrosch conducting the New York Symphony Orchestra. Tito Ruifo oi the Metropolitan Opera, Edwin Franko Goldman and his band. Weber and Fields. Vincent Lopez and his orchestra and others.

That first broadcast was typical of the scale on which Ayieuworth operated. He brought a pair or comedians. who were broadcasting over a Chicago station, to New, York for network broadcasts. They were Charles Correll and Freeman Gosden - Amos 'N' Andy.

By the time Ayleswortn left NBC in 1936 to become pruldent and board chairman of R.adio-Keith- Orpheum Corp., network radio had Ilyeegotne firmly established in the

In 1937.he became it member of the management of the Scrlpps- Hmvarv.-l newspapers, and was pub- lisher of tho New York World-Tel- egram from 1938 to 1940. He also was chairman of the board or the giant Radio City Music Hall from me to 1945. For a time he also was consultant to Press Association, Inc., a. radio subsidiary of the AI- nooiated Press.
