THE LATE JAMES BRAZIL.

James Brazil.died at his residence on Ottawa Street, Summerside, at 5 o'elock

Wednesday morning, Augus Ist. He had been ill for along time. His end was calm and peaceful, The fai.ure of strength was gradual and it was thought he migh: linger some time longer, but the sudden

approach of the Great Messenger come Oo Taeeday morning, July 3let. There wus no doubt bis last houre were at hand. He wae well prepared for his last Journey. He devoutly received his last sacrements and died fortified by all the rites of Holy Church.

Deceased was born at New Rose, County Wexford, Ireland, November 2, 1818. In nie early youth and until age and diseare robbed him of his natural vivacity h: evinced the fiery apirit of Lis kinsmen o/ old when there was question of religion or country; moreover, he posse ised a deep rooted sense Of justice. He cam? to Am erica early in life, making his home in St Jobn’s, Nfld , about fifteen years. 1n May of 1854 he moved to Charlottetown, and in Uctober of the same year married Mar garet, eldest daughter of Mr. Michael Murphy, Soath Shore. She and seven children survive to mourn the loss of a kind husband and father. The eldest daughter left Summerside twenty-four years ago to join the Sisters of the Cougre- gation de Notre Dame, Montreal, the second is Mra. H. P. Woods of Summer- ride, and the third, Mre. J. Kane, of St. John, N.B. His eldest son John is now living 10 New Glaegow, N. S,; the second, Joseph, is in the American Express Com- pany, Omaha, Nebraeka; Thomas B. is manager of acopper mine in Trail, B. C., and Frank, the youngest, is in the Klua- dyke. ’

It wae never his ambition to amase wealth, butto do good in every way pos- sible to all those who appealed to his sympathy. Many keroic deeds of chars ity must certainly be noted in the Great Book. He deservingly enjoyed the es- teers and respect of all, and those who koew him during all those forty-five yeare in Summerside can testify that be ever proved himeaelf sincere, honest and unselfish.

He was thoroughly posted in the history of the town and took a lively interest in all the events of theday. He had an inexhaustible fund of legend and story, and his genial manoer made him a general favorite. Perhaps the most.that eould be said of him is summed up in the testimony of one of the influential men of the town who knew him for nearly forty years: “He reminds one of the eainis of old.” Could a higher {tribute ef esteem be paid to a fellowscitizem,?

The faneral took place Friday morning, Acgust 3, with a very large attendance, to St Paul’echurch and cemetery. The Requiem High Mass was celebrated by Rev D J G MacDonald, and the office of the deacon was sung and the buriai ser- vice performed by Rev J A MacDonald, Miscouche. The pail-bearers were Messrs Thomas Frizzle, Patrick Ryan, P T Fan- nivog, J P McKay, Chas Muphy and Mat- thew Dempsey. Mrs Brazil and the family have sincere sympaiby in their 2e- ieavement,

Big Day’s Racing at Riverside Park, Tignish,

One of the finest days’ racing io the bietory of Tignish was that witnessed on Riverside track Saturday last. The day was propitious, the attendance large and the best horses of the Weet Riding of Prince” faced the starter, Forward, Dr. Murpby’e handeome chestnut, was again the hero of the day and hie whirlwind bursts ef speed were very exciting. He started out of his class in a free-for-a'l agsinet such old compaigners as Ielaod Messenger and Pathpointer, both of which have low marks, and finished an easy wia- ner in three straight beats. Regrets were freely expressed that “Kid McCoy,” his opponent of Thursday atthe other Tig- nish track had not.the courage to follow the gelding into the Freesfor-all. The mansgement was everything that could be devired,and. tod much credit cannot be given Mr J Albert Brennan, for the succese attending the day’s sport. At the end of the Free-for-all, McCarthy, the driver uf Forward, got a rousing reeeption and was vigorously “hoisted” by the crowd. The following isthe summary :
