Tax Concert Last Nicnt.—At the Phil- harmonic Hall last night the Masonic Concert given with the assistance of a number of jolly tars from the men-of-war, was a grand success, A good audience assembled, who listened with enjoyment to the spirited rendition of the sailors’ songs—fu'l of the flavor of the sea. Cuvecu Ry orentnc.—The Long Creek Baptist house of worship, which has been closed for some time for repairs, will be re-opened Aug. 14th. Services will be held at ll a. m., 3 p. m. and7 p. m. Rev J. A. Gordon, of Ch’town, will preach in the afternoon, and Rev. E. C. Turner, of Cornwall, in the evening. The morning service will be provided for, but the name of preacher is not known as yet.— F. Temrenance Tans.—MecLeod’s Hall _pre- sented » pleasant scene last evening. “Naval Patent Lifeboat” Lodge, 1. O. G. Templars, under charter of the Grand Lodge of England and the United Services, was opened in due form at 7 30 by the Chief Templar, Mr. Frank Halil. At $ o'clock, a free meeting was opened to the public and presided over by the Deputy G CT, Me Geo Warwick. The entertainment consisted of songs, recitations and short ad- dresses, which were fully enjoyed by all. Besides having a lodge of Templ+rs eaca, we are glad to learn that both the Blake and the Magicienrs nave & branch of the Royal Nav:l Tew gerance Society, founded by Miss Agnes ic. Weston, of the Royal Sailor's tof, of Portsmouth, Englaad, and which is doing excellent work in Hor Majesty's navy.

The colt stake races yesterday attracted the largest assemblage seen in the park for along time. In the 2-year-old race, J R Lamy’s (Amherst) colt George Buchanan won in two straight heats; best time, 3.12}. In the 2.56 class, H. C. Lydian’s (Kent- ville) mare Erica Morgan won in three straight heats, In the 3 year old class, A. B. Etter’s (Amherst) Francis P. won. Best time by Katrine 2 40. Cardinal Gibbons was much pleased with this neighborhood. He celebrated Mass in the Sacr.d Heart Seminary yesterday, and was serenaded by the City Cornet band last night. He made a speech from the balcony of the Bishop’s palace, and left for home this morning.

Lonpoy, Aug. 9.—The House of Lords has confirmed the permission given to Lord Salisbury to sell his ancestral seat, Savernake, to Lord I[vent, formerly Mr. Guinness, the brewer With the three- quarters of a millioa thus obtained, Lord Salisbury’s creditors hope he will settle some of his debts.

Simua, Aug. 9.—The revolt of the Hazara tribes in Afghanistan becomes more serious daily. General Sir Frederick Roberts, with a large detatchment of troops, has been dispatched by the Indian Govern- ment to meet the Ameer at Jellalabad.

Toronto, Aug. .9.—Sir Daniel Wilson was buried to-day amid many signs of mourning. ‘There was a brief service at his house, at conclusion of which Rev. Dr. Sweeney conducted a funeral service at St Phillip’s Church, where Sir Daniel wor- shipped. The interment took place at St. James’ cemetery. Sir Oliver Mowat, Vice Chancellor Mulock, Thos. Hodgins, Dr. John Hoskin, and officers Hutton and Wright aeted as pall bearers. The Globe is booming Principal Grant as the late president's successor, and Professor Loudin’s name is also well received. ro Lawn Tennis Match.

Tue match played yesterday at Victoria Park between the officers of H. M. S. Blake and a team from the home club, to the surprise of a great many, players in- cluded, resulted in a beating for the lands- men. The club appeared to be having an ‘off day”— perhaps caused by keeping late hours—and succumbed to play which cer- tainly was not strong on their opponents’ part. Brecken and Ings are to be excepted, as they won all their sets in fine form. The following is the score :
