Library Automation

As some of you may have noticed, Robertson Library has some new computer terminals set up near the Reference desk. There are two different sets of terminals, one for books, the other for articles from periodicals.

The other terminals are called the ‘“CD-Roms’’. They contain three databases of periodical informa- tion. The three databases are Psyclit, Agricola, and Reader’s Guide.

Psyclit contains references to psychological articles. Itis used mostly for researching psychology papers of course, but it may be useful for other research projects as well. The journals it indexes include many popular psychology journals. Agricola is the actually the holdings of the American National Agri- cultural Library, but it refers to articles in several periodicals available at Robertson Library.

Reader’s Guide to Periodical Literature is the third database on these terminals. Reader’s guide indexes articles on popular topics contained in such magazines as Rolling Stone, Chatelaine, and various teen maga- zines to name a few.

The other set of terminals that used for finding books are called the ‘‘Bobcats’’, which is a name derived from ‘“Robertson (i.e. Bob) Cataloguing system’’. All of the books the library owns are listed in the system and you can find them under title, author, subject, etc. This system also contains the holdings on Reserve. They can be referenced under title or author, but also by course or professor.

The grand opening for the Bobcat system was held on Friday, Sept. 27 at 5:00. Mr. Crockett, the head librarian lead the ceremony. All of the library staff attended wearing commemorative sweatshirts labelled ‘*Bobcat: UPEI 91’’. Mr. Crockett and Mr. Hanus, the second to the head librarian also presented sweat- ers to President Eliot and Dean Smitheram. Dr. Eliot said a few words about the accomplishments of Mr. Crockett and the library staff over the years. The ceremony was concluded with the official flipping of the computer switch.

Residence Life

Residence Life at UPEI is beginning to pick up mo- mentum already this year. Athough they are not full to capacity, the residences are fuller and livelier this year than last. Students began moving into their respective residences on Sunday September Ist and for the past month they have been busy.

On Friday, Septeber 6th a Tri- House Party was held at the Dining Hall. The band ‘‘where’s Dave’’ enter- tained the approximate 325 students who attended. 50-50 tickets were sold at the door and Blanchard Hall RA Lyne Huet won the $40.00 prize money. This party was deemed a great success by all stu- dents. All three residences were well represented.

The following days, Saturday and Sunday (September 7th & 8th) a Residence Challenge Carwash was held to raise money for Shinerama. Bernadine Hall had no participants entered in this years event. Because the event was to be held only on Saturday, Bernardine Hall won the challenge trophy. Altogether, though, $480.00 was raised by the residence students for Cystic Fibrosis research.

On Sunday, September 15th, UPEI resident students participated in the annual Terry Fox Run. Marion

Hall successful raised $150.00... FANTASTIC!!! Hopefully next year Blanchard Hall and Bernardine Hall will give you arun for your money. (Whoops, pardon the pun.) Congratulations to Bobby Bryanton ~ who raised more than $150.00. Bobby won the T- Shirt for raising the most money for Marion Hall during this event.

House Committee Elections were held during the week of September 16-20th. [Blanchard Hall still has” to hold their elections.] Results are as follows:
