Appointment of Hon. Andrew A. Macdonald.

Sir,—It appears that my former letter |

Tespecting the fitness of the Hon. A. A. Macdonald forthe Senatorship does not meet with the approval of your correspon- dent ‘** Queen's County ” or of the editor of the Watchman. They endeavor to lessen the force of my argument by showing that 1 inadvertently forgot the fact that the Hon. Mr. Haviland was one of the dele- gates to the Quebec Conference, and that he still resides on this Island. Mr. Havi- land’s name did not occur to me at the time. For some years past he has not been con- sidered as a sympathizer and supporter of the Liberal-Conservative Party, and con- sequently would not be eligible for a politi- cal favor like the Senatorship. The Watch- man wantsto know how Mr. Macdonald was honored at the time of the Quebec Con- ference. The fact that he was selected as the culleague of Messrs. Coles and Whelan

Macdonald was when he led his party to, victory in 1878 and it troduced the National | Policy that has built up Canada so greatly during the past twelve years, should be an effectual reply to those who object to Mr. Macdonald's age. At 61, a man who has taken care of his health and lived a virtu- ous life, is only in the vigor of his manhood. And the rew Senator can compare favor- ably in this respect with many younger men who are ready to cry out against him.

With respect to Mr. Ferguson’s letter protesting against the relatives of Mr. Mac- donald defending his appointment, I may inform him that nearly one half of the Mac- denalds’ of King’s County (and they are no small body) are relatives of the new Senator, who has long been recognized as the chief, not only of the Macdonald's, but of the Scottish Highlanders in this Province.

Let Mr. Ferguson take care he does not participate in the attempt to throw disparage-

Sir, I would like to ask the City Coun- cil, through your valuable journal, if they have given the Electric Light Company authority to put wires through trees or any other thing that may beautify our streets / Now, Sir, we hear a lot of tatk about Arbor Day and tree planting ; Lut what is the use of planting trees if this Company are allow- ed to destroy them? Mr. Gillis went to the expense of moving two fine trees and there is no doubt but they will grow if the wire don’t killthem. In that case it would be right that he should ciaim damages. Mr. Angus, of telephone fame, has said that a wet night, when the current is on, it would be sure to make a ground and kill the tree. So that is authority enough. Shipped per sehr. Carmena, McVhee, master, from Cardigan Bridge for St. John’s, Nfld, on 2ist inst., by Jas. E. Macdonald, Esq : 26 head fat cattle, 29 fat sheep, 1,000 bush potatoes, 2,000 bush cats, 900 doz eggs. Value, $3,600. The cattle were fed by Geo E Goff, Michael Costello, Andrew McAulay and John Lar- thard, Cardigan; Thos Donohoe, Patrick Kelly and Alfred Gordon, Roseneath; Wm Gordon, Brudenell; George Moar, George- town Royalty; Jas Gordon, Wm McIntyre, New Perth; John Moar and Robt Curran, Baldwin's Road.

The registered shorthorn bull fed by Wm Gordon, Esq, Brudenell, was @ mag- nificeat animal, weighing 2,140 lbs, and it seems a pity to see so fiue a stock-getter going into the hands of the butcher.

The brigt Corsican arrived on the 25th inst., and is loading for St. John’s, Nfid., with cattle and horses.

Cardigan is becoming quite a port tor the cattle trade.

Mr. Geo E Goff sold 2,005 bushels of potatoes to Mr. KE. M. Ely this spring at 40 cents « bushel, all of which were grown on Woodville Farm, Lot 54. The McKin- ley bill does not hurt so bally after ail.

News Notes.

Fever is said to be raging among the officers and men of the British fleet at Ma'ta. It is reported that 40 men are sick on eac h vessel, and the hospitals are overcrowded.

The last of the old New Brunswick 6 per cent. bonds, assumed by the Dominion at confederation, will be dus first November this yoar. There wil then remain only about half a million British Columbian 6 per cent. bonds. The only Dominion bonds pay ing 5 per cent, now outstanding amount to under 2} millions, but there is still 140 millions of 4 percents. The saving in interest when these amounts are replaced by 3 per cents will be about a million and a half per annum, so that the outlook is very favorable.
