Ottawa, 12—L'incendie du parlement continue à alimenter les conversations. D'après M. Tarte, le désastre a été causé par lu cigarette ou le cigare d’un fumeur imprudent. Sir Hector Langevin n'a jamais pu faire mterdire de fumer dans les bâtisses du parlement.

Les pompiers ont fait leur devoir mais l'ontillage ne vaut rien ; pas d'organisation non plus : on se nuisait réciproque- ment au lieu de s'entr'aider et de partager la besogne.

L'incendie a duré huit heu- res. Toute la toiture de l'an- cienne partie du parlement est détruite, et des mansardes il ne reste que des ruines. L'eau à considérablement endommagé les étages inférieurs.

Beaucoup de documents ont été détruits dans les chambres de M. Davies.

M. Tarte évalue les pertes à $1,000,000, c'est peut-être exa- géré.

Cinquante hommes du dé- partement des travaux publics sont occupés à déblayer. M. Go beil, député iministre des tra vaux publics dit que les étages inférieurs seront habitable à. vant 2 mois, mais en attendant il faut trouver des bureaux temporaires.
