LONDON. Feb. 7-iCP)- Brit- .-lin's Labor Government turned back by a 10-vote margin tonight an attempt by Conservative leader Winston Churchill to force a gen- oral election over the Government's plans to take control of the steel llldustry.

The outcome means the 02 major firms in the British iron and steel business will pass into the hands of a Government holding company. the British Iron and Steel Corp- oration. Feb. 15.

Labor mustered 308 votes in the House of Commons to M for the opposition as the House rejected a motion by Churchill stating that nationalization oi stlel ”is not in the public interest and should be reversed."

While the motion did not con- tain the words "no confidence." sources close to Prime Minister Attlee said before the vote they were certain that, if the motion passed. he would ask the King to di:solve Parliament and call a new election.

Mrs. Diefenballer Dies Al Sasllaloon

SASKATOON, Feb. '7 - (CP)- Mrs. Edna Diefenbaker. 49, wife of J. G. Dleferrbakcr, K.C., Pm. gressive Conservative member of Parliament for Lake Centre, died today in a Saskatoon hospital.

She had been suffering some months from leukemia, an incurable blood cancer. and Mr. Diefenbaker did not attend the opening of iihe new Parliamentary session due to her illness.

Mrs. Diefenbaker,wa.s lihe form- er Edna A. Brewer. She was born at Langliam. 30 miles northwest of Saskatoon. and married Mr. Diefenbaker in 1929. The funeral is expected to be held in Saskatoon next Monday a.fternQon.
