The farmers of Ontario have during the last few months had a practical example of the benefits to them of protective duties on agricultural products in the case of wheat, the price of which, owig to the small supply, has been raised to the full extent of the duty of fifteen cents per bushel. If Sir Richard Cartwright’s tariff for revenue only was in force the price of Canadian wheat would be the price of Chicago wheat plus the cost of transportation to this country, or from ten to fifteen cents below the quotations now ruling.”

THE KENT CASE,

Phsicians Universally Admit the Diagnosis to have been Correct.

Orrawa, April 22—The diagnosis in the case of Mr.G. H. Kent, of this city, whose recovery from Bright’s disease by the use of Dodd’s Kidney Pills has been so extensively chronicled appears to have been a very correct one. The swelling of the body and extremities to an abnoral size the fearful convulsions and subsequent in- sensibility, the racking pains, the format- ion of the hard ridges across the nit of the stomach and the great loss of albumen are all symptoms ofthis terrible disease, and it is universally admitted by all who have been approached on the subject that the case was unmistakable in its character. It isalso universally admitted that he owes his restored health to the above men- tioned remedy.

The’ Monroe: doctrine is contained in follawing extract from the message sub- mitted to Congress by President Monroe on the 2nd December 1813 :—

“We owe it tocandorand to the amic- able relations existing between the Un'ted States and the Allied Powers to declare that we should consider any attempt on their part to extend their system to any portion of this hemisphere as dangerous to our peaceand safety. With the exist ing colonies or dependencies of any Eu- ropean Power we have not interfered, and shall not interfere; but with the gov- ernments which they have declared their independence and maintained it, and whose independence we have, on great consideration and just principles acknow ledged, we could not view any interposi- tion for oppressing them, or coatrolling in any other manner their destiny, by any Ruropean power, in any other light than as a manifestation of an unfriendly disposition towards the United States.” It is stated that the idea of the Monroe doc- trine was suggested by a British states- man, Mr. Canning.
