Orrawa, July 19.—The shrill notes of a siren blowing by Compressed air wiil next summer guide steamships through the Straits of Belleisle in téggy weather. which Col. Anderson, chief engineer of the marine de- partment, has well under way. Should they prove successful the scheme will be an innovation in more ways than one. Not only is the use of compressed air in- steal of steam a novelty ia itself, but the chief ewgineer proposes to generate this pneumatic force in @ way that is quite or- iginal in marine practice. Instead of the usual steam boiler the force for compress— ing will be furnished by a jet wheel driven by a water power with a fall of 126 feet. TR. compressed ait will be driven in pipys a distance of 2,450 feet tothe top of an eminence on whieh the lighthouse and sigual station are situated, As the straits are o.ly navigable during the late spring and summer, the water power will be eas- ily available for the entire period during which the signal will be of service to the passing steamers, The special advantage ofthis pneumatic-hydraulic device is its simplicity and safety. Oneof the most fruitful sources of accident to the signal ~pparatus isthe explosion of steam boilers. The architect of tue light house branch of the department left today by steamer Aberdeen from Quebec, to superintend the erection of the buildings aod the machinery which will be of the very best, will be sup- plied by the British ligut house board in time for installatiod next autume.
