Absentee Members

Noticeuble at this as at other session- of the Legislature is the absence of a number of members-half a dozen or more—who are chronic malingercrs or truants from their duties in the House and who show up, perhaps, twenty minutes each day or perhaps not for two or three days at a time.

Granted that our members are insufficient- ly paid and that their pres-ence is not always essential to the carrying on of business—there is usually always o quorum-mevcrlheless they have solicited their jobs and are supposed to be able to find time to discharge their re-ponsi- bilities. allow of delinquencies of this hind, at l-east without the fact being known far and wide. Members had to ask the pcrmission of the

House to ‘absent themselves. llere are a couple of excerpts from the report of the Legislature of April 2, I874, worth noting in this connec-

tron:

"Ordered: That Mr. Holland have leave to absent him-elf from this House during his illness.

"Ordered: That the Hon. Mr. McEachern have leave to absent himself from the House until Wednesday next."

lt might be a good idea to return to this old custom. The Jones Government being ap- parently short of taxation revenue, how about imposing a fine an those who habitually neglect their legislative duties? It might cause _some grumbling, but at least it would be more popu- lar than the extra three cents gasoline tax, or the five per cent corporation tax, or the other "fees and licenses" which have been slapped on so lavishly during the session.

Latin And Mr. Wright

It is to be hoped that when Hon. Horace

Wright speaks on the Budget he will explain

the reasons for the Government's discontinu-

ance of Latin in the rural schools. Premier Jones has done so, but the Premier has always been an onti-Latinist whereas Mr. Wright has here- tofore been on the other side.-»The public has a right to know why he has changed his mind, as expressed in the Legislature in I938 and re- ported in his own party press of April l8 of that year, from which we quote:

"The advocates of reform in our curricu- lum (said Mr. Wright) claim that the present course of studies may be suitable for future the

university students, but not suitable for
