Tur Stream DrepGe began work at the railway wharf yesterday. A new boiler has been placed in the dredge by McKin- non £ McLean. The boiler is of the best description, and the test hy the inspector was most satisfactory. It is, perhaps, neediesato add that the contract for tne boiler was let by the late government.

Aw Arruicrep Famity—A late Frederic ton, N. B, despatch save: Mr. Adolphus Sewell was today admitted tothe hospita’. Mr. Sewell’s entire family, nine in number, are now down with typboid fever. Mr. Sewell contracted the disease while caring for the other patients. Mrs. Sewell is very dapgerouely ill at the hospital to-day.

FRATERNAL Vistt.— About twenty mem- bers of Mayflower Division, Sons of Tem- perance, paid afraternal visit to Victoria Division, No. 4, Charlottetown, last even- ing. After routioe a most interesting literary and musical programme was car- ried out. The visiting brethren were ten- dered a hearty vote of thanks at the close of the meeting.

DISGRACEFUL CONDUCT.

Mr. Thomas Dovle who has held the position of sub-collector of customs for 24 years has at Jong last been dismissed aud a notorious partizan appointed in his place. Mr Doyle, whatever may be his faults, bad the reputation of being a very obliging and competent official. Friends and foes of both parties who had to do business with his effice have nothing but kind words to say of him. This, of itself, speaks volumes for Mr. Doyle aud shows that the hu»gry cabal who wanted his position, were more in their own beha!f than the good of the country. Men ap- pointed to positions who cannot read and scarcely write—who have to call in a neigibor or have a substitute to do tbe work for them are not like- ly to give Satisfaction in an import int public office. The new incumbent, Mr. John Houston, will yet find out that the public are not with him and that such men as Hon. Wm. 8S. MeNeiil, Wm. A. Houston and Mr. Warren would have been more satisfactory to the public than the recent appointee. Mr. McNeill, having held the office formerly and being a man of extensive knowledge, experience and general information, would have brought prestige and influence to the position, elements which apparently carry but litt e weight with the Laurier, Tarte, Davies combination. The opposition in parlia- ment should make a note of Mr. Doyles dismissal and when the wheei goes round, as it assuredly will, restore Mr. Doyle and do him justice after his opponents failed to manufactur? a single tenable charge against him. The Star Chamber executed him ex-parte without any evidence. Nortu Rustico.
