My original intent this week was to focus my com- ments upon the by now infamous repaot of the President's Flaming Advisory Group, but after some speculation I real— lized that the SUN would probably be full of stories and editorials about said report.

Let me instead address comments to the "Aware and Concerned Students" whose letter to the editor appeared in last week's SUN. I am most pleased to see that someone is interestedgenough to write a letter to the editor but after a small amount of research, and

On the subject of the Hiring Board; I have

been assured that no persons were hired with— out an interview, and

our $15,000 a year-plus, General Manager was not Chairperson of the Board, in fact she did not even have a vote (if it came to a vote to decide if a certain applicant was hired). And on the subject of applicants being» permitted to stay and take part in the debate during the council meeting, I have again been assured

that everything was legitimate. . .certainly the minutes of the meeting will speak for themselves when published. - "Aware and Concerned Students", I applaud your interest in student affairs during a time of such apathy among most students but please get your facts straight in the future. The latter is something we can all do something about. A little student involvement on vour part , and mine would allow

the council to spend more time making pertinent decisions and less time , trying to figure out what the student body desires. They won't know if we're not there to tell then. For

those unaware, Student Council meetings are open to all members

of the student body and a phone call to the

S.U. office will confirm the date of the next meeting. Let's get involved! The hiring ' board. was definitely a big production this year and rightfully so. With seventy—two applications for Campus Police and approximately fifty-two applications for bartenders on top of those for receptionists, radio station personnel,etc. , the Hiring Board was faced with quite a

large and time consuming task. This is the reason for the test given to the bartenders. It Was

done to save time and was based wholly on the

actual cash and inventory sheet which a bartender is required to complete at the end of eaCh shift. It certainly was not designed to make sure a person was not granted an interview for personal reasons. Nobody was hired who was not interviewed, as was summarized.

The comment about Heather Love, our new General Manager, is ~~ ' nothing more than an attempted slur based on a personal preference about who should have u been hired for the job. However, there is no reason to go into that here. 'I'o set things straight, the General Manager is required to sit on the Hiring Board as stated in Article XVI, Section I of the S.U. Constitution. y In this instance she was not, nor is reg-‘ uired to the chairperson of this board. I have been informed by the Chair- person of this board that more than adequate notice was given by our G.M.

The item that really me was the implication that this ' years Student Council was not doing their bit and the implications of power happy individuals in the organization out for only their own good. No Student Council

that this one will be the exception, but then again neither was last years. The lack 'of 'a basic framework of employees for this year has: caused some than normal decisions, but that is not the fault of this Coun- cil. As for the satenents :"Acoept your responsibility and give us our money's worth. You're not supposed to be in

this just for your

own personal benefits!", these are so unjusti- fied I can hardly bel-

this past summer, and

one other executive member quit work early to attend to various matters such as the reconstruction of parts of the Barn, flue radio station (a great improv— ement over past years), etc. . These menbers do spend a lot of time working in our best interests and their _ salaries (if you want to call then that) are a mere pitance when you compare it to the work involved. As far as I can determtiile,.nn1ch of their time is simply donated. ~- In conclusion, I feel this years council is doing an admirable job, even without considering the many unexpec‘ ted abstacles they have had to cross. I hope that this letter has served its pupose in helping those of you who are or were unaware of the issues in the letter v mentioned earlier in coming to a more rational conclusiOn of this years ' Student Council.
