EDITORIAL !!

As the new co-editors of the GEM, we would like to take this opportunity to extend a warm welcome to all students, both Frosh and those who have returned for yet another year in these hallowed halls, as well as the faculty and staff.

As first time co-editor’s, and the first in the history of the GEM, our job will not be easy; we both still have a lot to learn. However, as of yet we have encountered no insurmountable problems, and we can only hope that this year will be a good one for the GEM. We have spent much of the summer learning about the ups and downs of editing a student newspaper, and through trial and error have discovered that “all that glitters is not gold”.

Although it’s great to be able to say “Yes, I’m the editor of the GEM”, but it’s not as easy as it may seem. There are many long hours of work to be done, and much more responsibility than either of us even dreamed about, but in the short time that we have been working we have come to understand this responsibility that we have un- dertaken and are both willing to give it our best shot. However, we need the co-operation of many people in or- der to make this work. We depend on our staff as well as each other to do his share of the work, But with the staff that will be with us from previous years, and the incom- ing staff that we are looking forward to working with, the GEM has the potential to be a wonderful paper this year.

We'd also like to thank everyone who helped us with this issue of the GEM. We really appreciate the extra ef- fort that everyone gave to get this first issue out on time. Thanks guys!

We hope to see all the staff from last year back again for another great semester at the GEM, as well as lots of new people. Come on everyone, get involved!

Again, welcome back everyone, and the best of luck in the coming year!

Hello, my name is Dean MacMillan. I am _ the newly elected president of the UPEI Student Union. To all the new students at UPEI, I welcome you and tell you that you are at a great spot. Life at UPEI can be fabulous! To those of you

who are returning to UPEI, welcome back, and you are in for a good year.

I would like to tell you that I am very excited about the upcoming year. Myself, and all the executive mem- bers,as well as the student councillors all feel that this is going to be a banner year for the Student Union. There is a very good spirit among students as we head into this year and I am going to do my utmost to try and main- tain this spirit. We have a number of things going our way. First of all, we have a council and executive ded- icated to progress within the union, we also have a beauti- fully renovated student cen-

tre, and, more importantly, | we have a terrific line-up of |

exciting events for you to take part in.

I really feel that 1988/89 will be the year that fu- ture students look back to and say, “The Student Union really rocked that year!” There is just such a good feeling among you, the mem- bers of the Student Union, and all those directly associ- ated with the S.U.

One of the most impor- tant things that I want to say to you is that if, at any time, you have a suggestion, a com- plaint, or an idea, I want to be around to listen to you. I
