L885. Another Victory.

Tue contest in St. John yesterday re- sulted in the election of the Government candidate—Dr. Barker—by a majority of 131. The will of the constituency having been fully and fairly expressed a few weeks ago, this result was,of course,

expected, and the election, with the

expenses it has entailed upon the country, was quite unnecessary. If the Grits had been either wise or patriotic they would have accept-

ed the former verdict of the constituency —they would not have brought a candi- ‘into the field but would have per- Barker to be elected by

The British Elections.

The last British House of Commons was composed of 652 members ; the new one (the elections for which have begun) will be composed of 670 members. In the late house there were 369 borough and 283 county members; in the new one the proportions will be reversed and the counties will send 377 members to the boroughs’ 293. Between the three kingdoms the representatives are as fol- lows :—

England and Wales 495 Ireland. .....«+++s:- : 703 Scotiand oe

In England, by the new law, sixty boroughs were deprived of separate representatives, and in Ireland twenty five, while of Scotland’s twelve new seats ove are boroughs.

The general result of the appeal to the people will not be kaowa for about three weeks, as the elections, recurring. day after day, willoccupy more than a fort- uight.

In the meantime the world is deeply in- terested. As the London 7imes remarks, not only Vienna, Berlin, St. Petersburg, Paris, Rome aud Constantinople are watching for the issue with the deepest und gravest interest, but far off Cairo, Caleutta and Cabul for the politics and even the peace of the three continents may hang io the balance which a host of Irish navvies and farm laborers are to turn during the next fortnight one way or other. How much depends on the result, a study of the continental papers of this week will show. Roughly stated, the difference is that with Lord Salisbury in power England will have to be copn- sidered in Enropean combinations, while with Mr. Gladstone she will not.

On the other hand, the election is for the people at home one of the most vital importance. Lord Salisbury had the wit to seize upon some ill-considered remarks ,of Mr. Chamberlain and other Radical leaders, and the question of the disendowment of the Estabtished Church has been forced into promineace very much against the will of Mr. Gladstcae. The discussion of this question is cal- culated to divide and weaken the Liberal Party and to array against it the great influence and power of the English hierarchy. This will in all probability more than counteract the effect of the Liberal appeal to the English people on the Irish question. The Paruellites, on their part, are workiog like Trojans to secure the defeat of the Liberal Party. In a recent manifesto signed by Parnell, O'Connor, Justin McCarthy, Sexton, Healey, Redmond, O’Kelly and Biggar, they declare that the Liberals are appealing to the electors of Great Britain and Ireland under false pretences. They deuounce the coercion practices resorted to under the Liberal regime, and say the manner of the enforcement of the coer- cion act was most brutal, juries having been packed with unprecedented shame- lessness, and innocent men having been hung or sent to the living death of penal servitude. They point out that if the long-delayed triamph had not expelled the Liberals, Earl Spencer would still be at Dublin Castle, and coercion would be triumphant in Ireland. They declare that landlords, instead of making reason- able abatements in rents, which the de- pression of agriculture demand, and which every landlord in England and Scotland concede, would be evicting their tenants by wholesale, with Karl Spencer encouraging them, and police aud soldiery and the coercion magistracy would have filled the jails in assisiing them. And they say that under the name of free schools, Liberals are mak- ing av insidious attempt to crush reli- gious education and establish a state of tyranny and intolerance.

A manifesto such as this cannot fail to influence greatly the Irish coastitutencies as Well as all the English constitutencies in which Irish electors hold the balance between the Liberal and Conservative parties, and the prospect is for the Liberals decidedly darker than it was a month ago.

—A cable despatch from London to the Toronto Mail states that the Im- perial Government are pushing forward their arrangements for the fishery and trade commission with the United States. Sir Jobo will arrive in time to have a voice in the matter. Sir John represent- ed Canada at the lust fishery commission under which the treaty which expired last spring was negotiated. For that treaty he was fiercely denounced by the Opposition, but he has lived to see bis course approved by both parties. What- ever may now be said by Sir John’s Opponents there is nv doubt that in thtir

hearts they feel that the interests of Canada in this affair will be safer in his hands than they would be in those of any other man.

THE SERVIAN WAR,

Prince Alexander Victorious.

Sorta, Nov. 26.

Tne city is wild with excitement over the news from the front stating that Prince Alexander, at the head of the Bulgarian troops, has followed up his victory, and is driving the Servians slowly but surely from Bulgarian territory.

The last despatch says that Prince Alexander stormed the heights of Tradorod and oecupied the city.

Last evening the Prince made « triumph- ant entry into the city and was received with wild enthusiasm by the people.

Soria, Noy, 24.

The Servians attacked the Bulgarians centre at 4 o'clock this afternoon. They were repulsed and retired in disorder cross- ing the frontier at 5 o'clock, near Tzari- brod.

The Servians are now retiring from their positions at Tros, and the Bulgarians have advanced to the frontier.

Widden is being shelled by the Servians but it has not been set on fire.

Betoxape, Nov. 24.

King Milan has decided to abdicate the throne if necessary, and Austria will occupy Servia in order to prevent the accession of Prince Karagevigeritch.

The British Elections.

John Bright Defeats Lord Randolph Churchill,

Lonpvon, Nov. 24.

The general result of to-day’s elections is slightly in favor of the Conservative re- action, although it affords no certain indi- cation of the ultimate results.

At Birmingham there has been no dimi- nution of Radical strength, except that John Bright’s majority over Lord Randolph Churchill is smaller than the Radicals ex- pected.

Tne greatest numerical Conservative majority is that of Hon. W. H. Smith, in the Strand division.

Speaking generally, to-day’s figures ap- proximate those of last election, the Liberal vote summing up less and the Conservative more.

Reported Death of the King of Spain. Lonpon, Nov, 24, It is reported here that the Kiug of Spain is dead. LATER.

Lonvon, Nov. 24. The report of the death of King Alfonso created great sensation here. Later advices from Madrid however, show that the King is not dead but seriously ill. Eight physicians are in attendanc>.

Destructive Storm in New York. New York, Nov. 24.

The storm of the past three days has caused high tides and done much damage to property. The damage along North River is estimated at $100,000. Above North River all docks from Yonkers to Peekeskille are from one to two-and a-half feet under water.

Sr. Joun, Nov. 25. Yesterday's election for the representa- tion of the city in the Dominion Commons resulted, as was generally expected, in the return of the Liberal-Conservative candi- date by a handsome majority.

Congratulations from Ottawa Orrawa, Nov. 24. All the Cabinet Ministers here desire the St. John Sun correspondent to convey their congratulations to St. John City on its glorious triumph to-day. It was even better than they expected.

The Burmese War.

Rancoon, Nov. 24,

A despatch from Mempla says that severe fighting took place yesterday in the jungle, continuing until the central post of the Burmese waa captured, when they fled in all directions.

The Death Sentence.

Orrawa, Nov. 24.

A delegation will wait on the Minister of Justice to-morrow to urge the commutation of the death sentence passed on Simonds, of London, for the murder of his paramour.

Smalipox in Loudon,

Lonpon, Nov. 24.

The steamer Buenos Ayrean, from Montreal for Glasgow, has arrived at Greenock She has smallpox on board and has been placed in quarantine.
