I do not mean that -yery shallow opinion, every rediulous ‘heory—of which there is at present a supply equal to any demand—should be received with consideration. Neither do 1 mean that the truth can never be attained with certainty, and that con- sequently all tenets should be respect- ed for the reason that they are all equally liable to error. Not at all. What I mean is that, whilst holding eertain truths too vital to be over- looked, and too sacred to be com- promised or tampered with, we should treat those who differ from us with charitable forebearance. A man may be both honest and intelligent, and yet, ewing to his education, local environ- ment, and natural temperament, may believe things that are strange indeed. quainted, we may not agree with him, but we have no guarantee that our judgment is right and his wrong. If these remarks should seem to you un- ealled for this is why 1 make them: because you sometimes meet young men of many admirable parts, whose mfluence fcr good should be extensive, but who become narrow-minded and sour of disposition, and unable to co- operate in any good work, simply be- cause they cannot be persuaded that others my think differently from them without being either knaves or fools. My dear young friends, before closing I would add a few words more. We takegpfor.granted that to-day you are honest, honorable and possessed of a keen sense of right and wrong. So have others been who have gone forth into the world from the halls of colleges, but how many have persevered ? That’s the serious question. Giving themselves up to what is most enjoy- able in life,and accommodating them- selves to the easy habits of those around them, they lost their delicate sensitiveness of conscience and gradu- ally sank to a state of vicious indiffer- ence, becoming, if not remarkably wicked, at least purely worldly men— “Of the earth, earthly.’ The same insinuating dangers await you, and you need to be deeply convinced of the ex- istence of them, if you hope to guard against them successfuly. You have not, it is true, completed @ programme of studies so elaborate as that of big universities. Yet I ven- ture to say your training hitherto has been of a higher order than very many of our Jauded universities can give. Ithas qualified you to think sanely and argue logically—conditions without which no congeries cf data, let them be collected from all the corners of the globe, will make a man truly educated. The highest form of education (I may say, the only true from) is that which is concerned with developing the POTENTIALITY OF ONE’S OWN SOUL. The judicial habit- the habit of weigh- ing evidence and ascertining their true value- is oneof the most valuable products of education. But it is rare to an amazing degree in the instructed men of to-day; and yet we would pre- fer not to agree with Ruskin that “modern, educatiun for the most part signifies giving people the faculty of thinking wrong on every conceiveable subject of importance to them’’. However, you should continue to cultivate assideously this judicial habit. You shall have much need of it, for the secular periodicals, and a number of so-called religious ones, are rife with articles that either call into doubt, or openly deny, doctrines hitherto reverenced as essential parts of the christian heritage. The boldness of assertain and fascination of literary styles, often so characteristic of such fiterature, lend it an air of plausibility that lezds many an unc‘itical mind into deadly error. But you, if youg develop your minds on the lines

already marked out, shall not be en- snared by external forms; you will seek after and investigate, the substance of the arguments brought against Christian truth, and will show that they are either founded on erroneous data or false supposition, conducted according to fallacious reasoning, or directed against a tenet they have al- ready misrepresented. To qualify yourselves the better for this task, study the works of the great Christian thinkers. Life is short and, if you read rightly, you cannot read mach, so read only what is best.

My dear young friends, I see in you the foundation of lofty hopes for our country. I am no pessimist: I do not believe with those who continually proclaim the nineteenth century the worst of the Christian era ; but I know that certain evils threaten. the public well-being far more seriously than ever they did in earlier times; and, as a safeguard against them, we need honest, high-minded men in every office that influences the public con- science. We need them on the bench, at the bar, and in the pulpit, but above all, just at present, we need them in politics and journalism.

The greatest public vices of the day are centered in these two departments; and if you would ask me to give that vice a name, I would callit lying—! lying by word, lying by act, and lying cowardly silence. There are excep- tions, it is true, but they are only voices crying out in the wilderness. In you, therefore, andin other young men like you, who are still free from the poisonous taint, lie the hopes of our country.

Do not forget your high calling; never prostitute your facuities to the interests of any dishonourable cause, or the propagation of a lie; and your talent and education, if applied with zeal and perseyerence, will confera substantial boon on your land, and add a fresh: lustre to the venerable institution that sends you forth today crowued with its honors,

Leoture Last Nieuwr.—Rev. Mr. Lock» erby delivered a very fine lecture last night in Zion Church Lecture Hall. Mr. Lock« erby is a most attractive speaker, and any lecture from him would be good. The lecture was eqnally as good as that of the preceding night.

Cuayer or Tims.—On and after *Mon~ day next the 18th June the steamer Prin+ cess will leave for Pictou at helf-past nine o’clock (local) in the morning instead of seven a. m; returning here about half- past eight in the evening. Cuerse.—At the meeting of the cheese Board yesterday a resolution was moved by Mr. McEwen, snd seconded by Mr. L. Jenkins, t> the effect that all cheese shipped under ten days is to be allowed a pound and a fraction over-weight, and cheese over ten days to be allowed a half pound and a fraction overweight. This is to obviate any dispute between sellers and buyers.
