A Great Conservative Victory,

Good News For New Year's Day.

Rosamond's majority of 428 is a crushing blow to Grit hopes in the bye elections. They used every method for what it was worth. In Lanark they used the sectarian cry with good success. They worked the Haggart slander, but Haggart’s neighbors refused to countenance the story. They brought down Cartwright with his blue ruin and vituperation, and Preston with his boodle bags and beer. Thsir shouting brigade have returned to town and are eat- ing crow instead of turkey for New Year's dinner.

West Indian Reciprocity. Hairax, Jan. 2.

The publicity of the schedule of the re- ciprocity tariff between the United States and the British West Indies causes specu- lation here as to whether the West Indies’ intention is to discriminate sgainst Canada. There seems no reason to believe that such is the intention. But in such contingen- cies the Government here will undoubtedly take action to set matters right,
