ALLOW FOB. RAINY DAYS.

'lt is the fault of our young farmers. and not a few older ones, that they plan early in the spring to put too many acres into crop. They go through a careful calculation of how many days' work it will require to plow, barrow, plant, and sow a given number of acres, and find there are just days enough be- fore the end of seed time to accomplish it. Now, this making calculation before hand is all very well; but the fault is not making allowance for rainy days. \Ve should always hope for long, bright

' days oi sunshine in farming, as in other '- pursuits, but it is also the part of pru-

dence to remember that a large propor- tion of the season of seed time is taken up by rainy days. Not only are there many days when there is rain falling

. from the clouds. but when it is covering

the soil we wish to cultivate.

It would, perhaps, be a safe rule, after a farmer has made his estimate that lie

_ can plow and put in crop, say eighty

acres—no calculations being made for rainy days and days when the ground is too wet to work~to reduce his estimate one-half. If water in the air nntl water in the ground will not make this differ-

. ence in the amount of work done, it is

pretty certain that accidents to farm utensils. lanvinu of the team, or sickness or the farmer himself will make up the difference. i

Nor is it in the spring, alone, that allowance must be made for rainy days. “'0 can plow much less corn, secure muclilcss hay, and harvest much less grain than if the ground had always its requisite degree of moisture from some other source than from the clouds. It is wise, then, while laying out for a good summer's work, to take into consider- ation how we shall be delayed by the causes we have spoken of. It is much better every way not to disturb a good hay field, than to plow it up, and have it covered with weeds, because there is no time to kill them; for weeds and gos- lings will grow at times when the rain keeps the farmer within doors.—1’raz'ri'e Farmer.

He must know his soil—that of each lot; not only the top. but the subsoil.

He must know when is the best time to work them, whether they need summer fallowing.

He must know the condition in which ground must be when plowed, so that it be not too wet nor too dry.

lie must know that some grains re- quire carlier sowing than others, and

what those grains are. He must know how to put them in

He must know that it pays to have machinery to aid him, as well as muscle.

He must know about stocks and man- tires, and the cultivation of trees and small fruits, and many other things; in 3 word, he must know what experienced, ubservingfurmers know, to be sure of success. Then he will not guess—will not run such risks.—Rural Il’orld.

All his sur- roundings proclaim thc verdict against him :—his horses, cattle. \vaggons, liar- ness. plows, fences. fields—even his wife and children bear silent, but un- mistakable evidence against him. On the other hand, all these things will tes- tify favorably on behalf of the good for mer. Every passer by can read the evi- dence pro or com—This fact. alone. ought to stimulate every farmer to do his best, for the sake of his own character, as well as interest; for he may rest as- sured that every passer by will pro- nounce judgment according to the evi- deuce.

Laziness, in short, is the right and pro- per name for nine-tenths of the excuses given for bad farming.
