in revolutionary Ireland

Over 20 students and faculty crammed into the small Faculty Lounge in

.Main Building last Friday to listen to Professor Colman O’Hare of the English De- partment. He was speaking about the famous early 20th century poet, William Butler Yeats, and his favorite coun- try (you guessed it) Ireland! The introduction was given by the punning Profesor from the History Department, Dr. Thomas Spira.

Professor O’Hare readily stated .that Yeats Would not have liked the title of his seminar. The poet' would ' have found the notions of

revolution and Ireland to be

contradictory, since he view— ed Ireland as an autonomous country.

This seminar was sche— duled for last‘year, but it was cancelled due to the calling of a special senate meeting.

. The Lecture was well pre- pared and capably read, com- plete with handouts of select- ed poems which Were distri- buted to the audience.

'One of these poems, “Easter 1916”, has a special meaning for Dr. O’Hare. His family has been haunted for three generations by the events described in the poem. It tells part of the story of the

famous Irish “Revolution” of 1916. Professor O’Hare’s family lived in southern Ire-

\ land at the time, and his uncle Tom Proudly asked for one of the rebel proclama- tions of the new “Republic of Ireland”. He promptly sent it north to an orangeman friend of his. Shortly thereafter, the “Revolution” was crushed, and the post office was burn- ed by the English. All pro- clamations were seized and ‘ destroyed. To own one at the time was considered to be high treason.

Dr. O’Hare brought that very same proclamation to the lecture. Only three others are known torhave survived the scrupylous searches that the English soldiers, made. If Dr. O’Hare brought the do- cument to the Republic of Ireland today, it would be 'prized as a national treasure.

nar, you would have learned quite a bit about Irish history through the eyes of the great poet, Yeats. These seminars are also a good, informal way to meet your professors. Show them your support! The next faculty seminar will be held on October 25th. It will be given by Professor Wendell Maclntyre of the English Department, and it will cover his experiences in China. Be there!
