Loss of voice may be owing to in- flammatory swelling, <ither acute or chronic, or to ulceration of the lining membrane of the larynx, to paralysis, or to hysterical affection. Coming on suddenly accompanied with fever. pain in the larynx and upper part of the throat. increased on swallowing, and difficulty of breathing, the above Symptom must be regarded with some apprehension as one of the concomt- tants of a rapidly fatal disease, acute laryngitis. Loss of voice, however, fre- quently occurs quite unconnected with the other symptoms mentioned, and is then not to be so seriously regarded. Many persons are liable to it after ex- posure to night or foggy air, or after much or loud talking. Persons living in damp houses suffer from this form 1f aphonia, which is probably owing to the thickening of great susceptibility of the laryngeal membrane. When it continucs nothing affords greater relief than antimonial ointment, or croton il, rubbed over the fore part of the neck so as to produce a free eruption. Mustard plasters may be used, but are not so efficacious. A hot bran poultice to the throat at night, and a teaspoon- ful of paregoric, taken along with 20 drops of ipecacuana wine, will often remove a threatened attack. Inhaling steam from hot water, or spray from Seigle’s spray producer is sometimes of zreat service. In the more chronic ‘orm, 20 drops of tincture of squills nay be submitted for the ipecacuana. \ sirup made with Iinfuston of horse- radish is popularly and sometimes beneficially employed.

There are many complexions which chafe readily, and tan in the spring winds.
A simple preparat'on of sweet cream rubbed into the skin after washing it thoroughly is a remedy for this trou- tle. This should be applied at night just before retiring, and the next morning the face should be washed thoroughly first in the lukewarm wa- ter and afterwards in cold to give tone to the muscles. Some ladies use gly- cerine in the same way, diluted with half of its bulk in rosewater. This preparation is rvbbed in the face and hands, and gloves are worn at night. A little of Scrubb’s cloudy househcld ammonia in the water is a help toward keeping the skin firm and free from wrinkles. There certainly is no reme- dy for wrinkles after they come. It should be remembered, however, that an amiable temper, a clear conscience
and freedom from a_ disposition to worry over the petty annoyances of life are qualities of ind and heart that will keep the face free from wrinkles, and bcautiful to the ripest old age.
Milk Diet tu Typhetd.
Da Costa thinks the exclusive milk diet is a source of mirchitef rather than good, and recommends three perts of milk alternated with one broth. Lie, however, evidently does not recognize the fact that the latter has scarcely any food value, the little extract of meat it contains acting so'ely as a stimulant, and, moreover, with a great tendency to cause flatulence. It has on several occasions been pointed out that whenever curd can be seen in ee motions, too much milk is being given, and it may indicate that it is not being digested at all. It is best re- placed by white of egg beaten up, and largely diluted with water; in this wey car be introduced any requisite amount of real food, and in the bland- est and most readily digesiible form; it leaves no solid residue and can cause neither diarrhoei nor gaseous disten- tion.

ASTOR ON CANADA,
John Jacob Astor Used to Transset ® Large Part of His Business
in Montreal.
John Jacob Astor, the founder of the Astor family of New York, once had an establishment in Montreal. Astor was born in Heidelberg, in 1763, At the age of 16 he set out for London to seek his fortune, from wience, aftera residence of four years, he migrated to America. It had been his Intention to pursue in the new world the musical instrument business, a knowledge of which he had acquired while employed with his uncle in London; but learning ircm a fellow passerser, on the way cut, of the fortunes tu be made in the fur trade, the bent of his busi- ress pursuits was changed. Settling ia New York—which at that time, 178%, was in a state of deep financial é2 bression, caused by the seven years war of independence, just brought to a close—Astor, that he might the more surely gain a knowledge of his chosen business, hired to a Quaker fur tral- er for the small wages of $3 per week, retaining the right to dispose of the mull stock of musical instrumenis that he had brought out with him. It Was not long before the energetic young German set up for himself. ‘Lhis was, indeed, in a small way, fer h- traveled through the country bear- ing his pack on his back. To him tle wilds of central and western New York, the haunt of fur-bearing ant- mals, was a source of unto!d wealth, which he soon turned to great profit. Lut his energy was such that he soon «extended his operations into the great- er wealth producing wilds of the frozen north and the pathless west. This bringing him into competition with the more extensive Canadian trade, tv leng centred in Montreal, he determin- ed to “carry the war into Africa,” and attack the Canadian fur lords in their stronghold. With this end in view he established a branch in Montreal fer purchasing direct from the Indians and trappers. Aecording to law he was not allowed to ship his stock to his headquarters at New York. Al shipments from the colonies had to be ent direct to Great Britain. He therefore leased from Frobishire th- warehouse on Vaudreuil street where his winter's purchases were stored un ti: they could be shipped by the first vessel sailing to London. Astor came regularly to Montreal to look after his Canadian trade, often stupping a month at a time. While accumulating wealth fast he was still thrifty, for he feve the hotel the go-by and lived in his warehouse, occupying the room formed by turning the gateway into a window. The outward appearance of the Astor warehouse has remained al- most unchanged since the days when in it he competed for the Canadian fur trade with the all-powerful Hud son Bay Company. About the begin ping of the century the colonial ship- ping laws were relaxed and colonis*s cculd enter into direct foreign trady. ‘hus Astor, finding little further need for keeping up his Canadian branch, closed up and conducted his westera tusiness wholly from New York.

Gilbert Parker, the Canadian novel- ist, was entertained at Québec on the oceasion of his visit there. Mr. J M. Lemoine, speaking of Mr. Park-_r, said: More than once it has been the privi- ‘ege of Canadiirs to meet in order to pay honor to a compatriot who had won his spurs on Canadian soil. deep prejudice, shall I say ths word, that rooted hostility, until of late years, to literary labor bearing the
colonial stamp. Mr. Parker, a colonist, has asserted himself fearlesly, success- fully, in the very citadel of British thought. In the length and breadth of the British Empire his name now is one to conjure with, You know he has captured the ear, won the gooa will of the great metropolis of Britain, as well as the admiration of the other younger branch of the English race on this side of the Atlantic. Until latety, among many gift<d colonists, one spe- cially, as our Lterary ambassador abroad, represented Canada, the gift- ed, versatile Grant Allen, a Kingston boy once, now a renowned FSvelist o’ London. Toronto now has s nt forth, in her gifted son, Gilbert Parker, e2 second ambassador to represent abread the charm of Canadian life, its man- hood, its stirring legends, its present aspirations.
