"I'm safe enough wherever I am. I can take care of myself," boast- ed Young Jerry.

I see one," squeaked Young Jerry.

"Probably you will, but the chances are that then it will be too late," replied his father.

"What do you mean by it's being too late?" asked Young Jerry.

"I mean just this." replied Jerry. "You will have been caught by the time you see the trap, and then it will be too late."

"Yes," spoke up Mrs. Jerry, "The time to learn about traps is before you are caught in one. Take your father's advice and stay here where you are sale from awful traps."

"But it I never go where traps are, how will I ever learn about traps?" squcaked Young Jerry.

"You won't need to learn aboutl traps if you stay here," declared Mrs. Jerry.

But Young Jerry was living alone. He had not as yet found a mate and that it one reason he was given to roaming. That very night found him down on the River. He didn't give so much as one little thought to the warning he had been given by his father and mother.

West opened the unbid suit, clubs, and after East put up the ace, declarer could virtually spread the hand. -

should have bid six diamonds in- stead of five-that North's bidding had made the slam an odds-on chance. South, for his part, felt that after he had jumped to two spades on the second round and later supported hearts, North had enough inforlmtion and values, either to bid Ilvc diamonds over three hearts, or six diamonds over five diamonds. -

It is very probable that the aver- age partnership would find no dif- ficulty. in getting to six diamonds on this hand, and so it was not exactly to the credit of the ex- perts sitting North-South that they stopped at game. Perhaps I direct raise by North to two-dia- monds would have done the trick. but as this reviewer sees it, his actual one-heart response, though fancy, should have been fully ef- fective. (As a matter of fact, a more single raise would not have done full justice to North's hold- ing.).

The crux of the actual holding sequence-overlooked or ignored by South-was what North did not do over three hearts! He did not bid three notrump, and he did not bid four hearts. Either of these actions would have been discourag- ing to slam aspirations; thus, in simple logic, North's four-diamond bid was distinctly encouraging. At the very least, South should have bid four hearts instead of five dia- monds: then North would have "corrected" to diamonds, and South would not have had to be very

brave to carry on to a diamond slam.
