Private advices received here from members of the Hawaiian Legislature says that were it not for the presence of English and American men-of-war in the harbor, an outbreak would undoubtedly have occurred on the assembling of the Legislature, Dec. 19,

Minister Ashford brought out the Hono- luiu Rifles, with the intention of subverting the government at once, but the success of the design was prevented by the office*s of the vessels, whose threats stopped the, pro- posed insurrection before any sanguinary trouble occurred.

The King’s vetoes are among the chief features of the contention. Their legality, however, and the validity of the constitu- tion, will be sustained without doubt, as the King has a majority of the Sapreme Court.

A letter from one of the legislators says if the King does not assent to the acts of the present legislature, he will be de- throned, and a provisional government. sub- stituted.

THE CREW SAVED.

Boston, Dec. 29,

The British steamer Newcastle; City, from Newcastle for New York, has been lost with a heavy cargo of assorted mer- chandise. The crew has been saved. Capt. Thornton states that his vessei was on the inside between Nantucket _lightship and the land where the water is two or three feet deep, whilst the {steamer draws over 25. His ship took bottom in a very high sea and the

bottom of the Neweastle City was crushed in where she struck on the hard sand. The ofticers and crew

had much difficulty in escaping from the wreck. The vessel was worth $190,000, and is only partly insured. The cargo of iron, cement and fire bricks was valued at $750,000, and is fully insured.

One of the worst storms of the year raged from 11 last night till 3 o'clock this morning. The wind blew 40 to 45 miles an hour, moderating at 5 o'clock to 20 miles. The Yarmouth schooner Arthur, from P. E. Island, for Boston, isa total wreck at Sandy Cove, Liverpool, The crew had a very narrow escape. Her bottom is out and 7,000 bushel of potatoes afloat.
