Metals displayed steadiness but on other divisions, losses lent a. touch of easiness to.the list. A few shares of Bank of Montreal went down 3 1-2 points for the top loss of the day.

WTNNIPEG, June 16—Continued unfavorable crop news from south- ern Saskatchewan was offset to some extent by weakness at Chi- cago and selling for southern ac- count as wheat prices slipped from gains of almost two-cents on the Winnipeg Grain Exchange today.

Dropping back in late trading, futures closed 7-8 cents higher to 1-4 cent lower with July at $1.23, October $1.16 7-8 t0 $117 and De- cember $l.14 3-4.

Improvement was noted in de- mand for Canadian wheat and sales worked overnight and dur- ing the morning were placed at 500,000 bushels. Prices moved up almost two cents at high levels but reacted with minor losses post- ed at times. .

Coarse grain trade was marked by a sharp advance in July rye. Other prices were firm in dull trading.

TORONTO. June l6 - Mining shares continued the downward drift on the Toronto market today, the golds losing about a point in the index and the base metals showing lesser losses. The list outside the golds was held to an even average by a sizable advance in the western oils.

In the oils Home set the pace with a trade of 21.000 shares and an advance of 15 cents to 2.50. Okalta. Vulcan and Dalhousie had the same gain on lighter turnover. Nearly all the cheaper issues were up 1 to 4 cents and Rnyalite post- ed an advance of 2 I-4 to 43 1-2.

Stocks Dip To New Low Since

NEW YORK, June 16—In slow trading, the stock market today fell to the lowest level since July s, 1936. l

The day's trading presented a1’ story of discouragement over steel strikes, attempted rallies by sel- ected issues and a late decline led by steels and motors.

Business got away to a quiet start, with slight losses predomin- ant. As dealings proceeded scat- tered issues moved ahead for gains of fractions to around a point. It was the failure of these rises t.o generate enthusiasm in the rest of the market which brought a. gen- eral softening, brokers said.

In terms of the Associated Press average of 60 shares, the market was off .07 of a point at. 63.8. Transactions declined to 698,630 shares from 927,463 Tuesday.

Canadian stocks were lower. Distillers - Seagram. International Nickel, McIntyre. ‘Walkers and I-Iollinger declined fractions. Minor gains were shown in Brazilian, Ford and lmperialOil. Lake Shore, Canadian Marconi and Dome were unchanged.

On the one hand, as current trading background. they said. were such favorable items as the

brisk rebound of electric power output and the report of "iron age“ that strikes are having a

"minimum" of influence on steel markets. On the other side were rising fears labor disturbances, if

prolonged may make a dent in trade and industry. Stocks were down about frac—,

lions to 2 points or so at the worst but recovered a bit in late trad-‘
