A CRITICISM,

Sir,—Tue Patriot’s report of the epeeches given at the forma! opening of the Prince of Wales Co!lere makes Pre mier Farqubarson say that Dr. Anderson became principal in 1862. This is not correct. Dr. Anderson became priveciral after the resignation of Dr, Inglis, which was subsequent to 1868,

The cost of education, said the Premier, * is still wereasing, yet neither people nor government had cried halt * * * * there 18 DO Complaint from the oeople.” True, the “ people ” neither called “ halt,” nor have they made “complaint.” But what of the Grit Government? It did make “complaint,” and it “cried halt.” What of the $150 supplement and the $40 bonus which the Grit Government bas taken off the teachers’ salaries? But this is one of Farqubarson’s ways of encouraging edu- cation !

Avother gentieman stated that the P. W. C.is “abreast of the times in the teaching of classics, mathematics and science.” In respectto the first two ! shail say nothing. But “ science,” for- eooth ! Only the mereet rudiments of in organic chemistry and physics are taught in that institution,

Another gentleman—the acting Attor- ney General — the man with a portfolio,— without a seat in the Legislature,“‘referred particularly to the Normal school and the capital work of that department.” Let me say that while student teachers are taught how to acquire knowledge, they are not taught how to impart that know- ledge. Provision is made by our school laws forstraining school, but no one has thought fit to supply the “provision .” There isno duly 4ualified instructor in pedagogy. By all meane let this latter be provided before we take uo the addi- tional etudies of German and philosopby, political economy and n.etaphysica,

DISMISSAL OF MR. BRACE.

Sin,—I notice in tue last issue of Tue Examiner that Mr. R. K. Brace has been dismissed from the position of Gas In- epector for the City of Charlottetown and that the office has been taken over for the present by Mr. Davy. Iospector of Weight and Measures. No doubt this is a scheme concocted until the next election when the office will be again created and given to @ person unfit for the positions who bas been clamoring for the office for some time past.

It appears there was no caarge against Mr. Brace,but that be was a Conservative. All invelligent Liberals will regret this course by the Government as Mr. Brace was a careful ani efticient official, and has for 3 number of yeare been rather inde- peodent and took no par: ia party poli- tics. The Liberel Government at the present time scem te be Josing ground py turning out of cifice men who are not interf-ring in party politics and Jeaving thuse in office who are cfficious partisans. Itseema the party holding the reins of Government are the patty of stupidity No doubt tney have not furgotten the re~ sult of the two late bye-elections in Bel fastand Murray Harbor. No doubt the result was occasioned to a large extent by the diemisea! of the R-v Mr. McNeill from the office of secretary of Educatien, he being @ resident of that section and not an officious partizan. Owing to the age of Mr. Brace’s predecessor, it become necessary to fill the position by a yeunzer man ; and now for no reason, no charge being preferred against him, he has been summarily dismis-ed. Mr, Brace has many friends in the liberal ranks who

Sir,—I observe by the Patriot that Mr. Arthur Peters is not pleased with the manner in which the opening of the new Prince of Wales Cellege was conducted. And no wonder! He was one of those in- vited to situpon the platform and when he got to the building he found that there was not even standing room let alone a place to sit down.
