The Dominion Exhibition.

The Dominion Exhibition to be held at Halifax, N. S., noxt September, at which $15,000 in cash prizes will be distributed, affords a vrand chance, not) likely to recur for many years, for our Proviuce to come to the (rout. We are glad to see that every facility aud encourage- ment possible is being extended to our farmers, mechanics and others, to forward their exhibits to this great Exhibition of the products and industries of the Domi- niov. An advertisemeat is published to every paper published in the Province, inviting intending exhibitors ‘to forward eutries of all animals and articles, which they wish to exhibit at Halifax, to the Secretary at Charlottetown (Mr. A. MeNeill); and all such animals and articles, if considered ot suflicient merit tor competition, will b: conveyed to and from Ilalifax Exhibition free of charge to their owners.

Surely, with such incaceménts as these, our agriculturists, me¢l:anics and manu- facturers, will make an effert to have the Island well represented at the Dominion Exhibition of 1881.

Wm, MecKerron, Exq., the Secretary of the Dominion Exhibition, paid our Province a visit this week ; and did much to forward Exhibition work. He had an interview with several of our manufac- turers, and gave them every encourage- ment to forward exhibits to Halifax. Mr MeKerton also went to the Government Stock Farm, accompanied by the Hon. Dy Ferguson, Chas. C. Gardiner, H Longworth, Esqs., and others, aud ex- pressed himself highly lelighted with the sppearance of thé'stock. and the adaptabil- ity of the farm for the purposés for which it has been selected and set apart. He was also charmed with the surrounding coun- try, which he pronounced second to none that he has seen anywhere since he left Scotland, of which he is a native. Mr. McKerron is well pos'ed in Exhibition work, and his visit here cannot fail to be productive of good results.

Robbing a Graveyard. SEVERAL times we bave received com- plaints of graves beiog desecrated in the Sherwood Cemetery. Flowers, which the hand of affection and respect has planted on graves, have been plucked and carried off. One would thick that this was a sufliciently advanced step for heartlessness to take: but we have just been informed of a more re- voltiag oceurrence. The thieves who were some time siner content with the flowers, now cross tle enclosures and reoting up the plants from the graves, boldly bear them away. Within the last few days valuable plan's have been rooted up and carried off from the enclosure of W. R. Watson, Esq., and those which were left have been destroyed. What motive cao induce the perpetrators , to such heartless aets we fail to guess, save it be to sell the plants, and pocket the proceeds, It was thought a barbarous practice once to rob the dead who had fallen on the field of battle, and the practice had to be put a stop to by very summary wyeasures. We think it is high time that some such proceedings were taken against the ruffians who prowl through graveyards to steal away the only tokens of aection which loving friends bestow on their beloved dead.

Locomotion.

Ir is seareely necessary to say that the report of the ** Patriot” that the locomo- tive attached to the special train convey- ing Sir Hector Langevin broke down, is not true. There were a few necessary stoppages tor water, e'c., and during one ot these, it is possible that_one or two nuts in the kocomotive may have been tightened. But there was no delay to note; and the time made was exception- ally good. I: is however, stated that some of the engines on the road, are not to be depended on, anc occasionally break down. The English engines, imported by the contractors, are certainly not fit for the work required of them; and we hope they will ere long be replaced by others. The Government is sparing no expense iu puttiog the railway in first- class order (it is now, we believe, in better condition than it ever was); and they are not likely to stick at providing the few locomotives tliat may be neces- sary.

The Khedive of Egypt has informed France that he would act in conformity with the wishes of the Porte, and therefore would not recognize tlie proposed French protectorate in Tunis. This statement has caused some surprise in Pacis, where it has been believed that the intrigues carried on in Caivo and Alexandra by French emissa-

POUND PEAD WITH HIS HEAD EMERSED IN A WATER-BARREL, IN REAR OF HIS SON- IN-LAWS RESIDENCE—THE INQUEST,

Mr. Richard Thorne, who for maoy

years kept a public house on lower Spring Park Road, died uuder very pain- ful cireun stances last evening. The facts of the sad affair will be found in

the following report ot evidence taken at the inquest held iu view ol the body, by Dr. Conroy, Coroner, at noon to-day :

Mrs. Mary Ann Hareineton (sworn.) [ saw my father, the deceased, before he came up to see my sister, Mrs. Brown. | telid Loo Harringion to go and see if he went up. This was at 7.30, Mr. Har- rington went up with him and left him at Mr. Brown’s door. I did not see him after that until I saw his dead body. He was childish of late. We used to follow him as he got weak on his limbs, and used to fall. He has not drank any liquor for some time, He has been taking medicine. He did not appear more childish that day than any other time.

Leo Harrineron (sworn.)— Yesterday evening about 8 o’clock I left the house in company with Mr. Thorne te come up and see his daughter Mrs. Brown, and left him in company with Mrs. and Mr. Brown, and then went away. While walking with me he seemed to labor hard on his limbs, and before he left the house he had two weak turns, and was brought in and left on the bed, When he came to this door he took his grand daughter by the hand and Mrs. Brown asked him if he would mind the child while she and Mr. Brown went up town.

Picton S. Brown, (sworn.)—Between 8 and 9 o'clock my wife and | were talking about going up town. We looked down the street and saw Mr. Thorne and Leo Har- riaugten coming up. When he came up he says are you going for a walk. We Said yes, but if you are coming in we will stay and have a chat. He said, “go on, and I will take care of Bertie for you.” We consid- ered, and afterwards went up town, leaving him in the house. Mr. Thorns’s little boy, Arthur, came up, and my wife told him -to stay in the house also. Mr Thorne, when we were leaving, said to not be long. We had not been away Ufteen minntes. When we came back my little girl was crying. | said what’s the matter, and she still -con- tinued te cry da! da! and held her grand

pa’s hatin her hand’ 1 asked the servant girl where Mr. Thorne was, and she said she thought he had gone home. I then said to my little girl, where is you da da, dear, and she took me by the handand led me round where I found Mr. Thorne in the rain barrel. I could not tell whether I thought he was dead or not. I was stunned. I lifted. him up and laid him accross my knee and rojled him, thinking to bring him to life, but could © not. He had a fashion, when he would come to my house, of going to the water barrel and taking water in bis hand and bathing his head, as it, was very hot at times. He was much deranged in wind, and continually talking of signing his property away (which he did not) and going te jail,etc. I could net tell how much water came out ef his mouth when I rolled him. I should say a pint. When I went away the servant girl was rockiug the baby in the rocking chair. Dr. Blanchard gaye the deceased medicine three days ago.

Q. Do you know if he went to a barrel to batii his face he was in such a condition that he might helplessly fall in so that he could not recover !

I do. He has often had those weak turns, and if he would put his head ina cask he might get so weak that he would not be able to extricate himself.

Parnice Farmer (sworn.) About half past eight o'clock Mr. Thorne’s’ daughter called to me and told me her father was either dead or drowned. I ran up, and when I got te the back door Mr. Brown had him in his arms carrying himip. I have known the deceased since he came to the Island. One could tell he was deranged in mind by hearing hiw talk of late.

James MeLgop, M. D., (sworn.)—I per- formed a post mortem eXamination at 12 o'clock last night on the body of the de- ceased. On examining his mouth, I found his tongue covered with a quantity of green- ish pulp, apparently haif-digested food. His langs were healthy, but gorged with bleod-—highly congested. The right side of the heart was full of blood; the leftside was emptly or nearly so. The heart itself ap- peared diseased. It showed signs of fatty degeneration. The liver appeared healthy, butalsocongested. The stomach contained some gas, some partially digested food, but no quantity of water that I could make out. The larynx was free from froth, and showed no congested appearance. The body seem- ed well nourished, aud showed no marks of violence. He showed evidence of drown- ing. it would be possible fora healthy man to drown himself by emmersing his head in a barrel of water. I cannot say from the post mortem whother his death was inten- tional or accidental, He might, in the act of bathing hig face, have a momenbary

Crop Prospects in England.

AN INTERVIEW WITH ARECENT VISITOR TO TORONTO,

At Chicago, a Tribune reporter got hold of Mr. F. F. Belsey, one of the delegates to the Sunday school convention in Toronto, and questioned him as to the crop prospects in England this year. Mr, Belsey is a dealer in wheat at Rochester, England. He said :—§

‘When d left Kngland this spring the prospects for a good crop were better than for some years past., The farmers were looking forward to a decidedly better sea- son. The spring crops were rather back- ward, but we were having a dry séason, and that was very favorable. The great trouble with us, you know, is damp, cold weather. fhe opposite has been the rale in’ England so far this season, and generally speaking the farmers’ prospects are more cheerful than usual iv consequence.

‘“ What prices will they realize for their

| product ?”

‘‘ It begins to look as though the Ameri- can short crop was having a good effect upon prices. J think our farmers will realize well upon their wheat crop this fall.”

‘* How arethe European crops to which England also looks for her-supply of bread- stuffs ?

‘Tt is said that the Russian crop is a very good one, which, of course, will help to compensate for the American shortage.” ‘* What is the extent of the acreage un- der wheat in England this year ?”

** What will the average yield per acre be, in all probability ?’

‘The standard average in Kugland, you know, is 20.9 per acre, and the prospect, as fer as | can see, is that the present crop will be fully ap to the standard average. The 35,000,000 ef human mouths constantly to be kept supplied in Great Britain and Ire- land requires an annual alluwance of five and a half bushels of wheat each, or 2 total of nearly 200 000,000 of bushels. Thus, you see, we shall have to import over 100,- 000,000 of bushels.”

‘“What do you think will be the final effect of the competition of the cheap wheat producing lands of America with the much more expensive lands similarlyapplied in Great Britain ?”

**7 believe that no farmer, for hia own sake, should go en trying to gtow What others can permanently produce aud send at alower rate. Still, with a full tempera. ture and a fairly favorable season it séems to me that the heavy corn lands of, our country can yet grow wheat against the world. If, therefore,from our present three million acres under wheat we have to with- draw a million anda half of our poorer lands, we should, as we have 65,000,000 acres of cultivable seil in Great Britain, only have to find remunerative employment for about one thirtieth part of the cultivat- ed. acreage of our country. \ Possibly you have no idea of the prodnetiveness. of the heavy corn lands! have alluded to. Under the most favorable conditions I have known some of these lands produce an average of eighty bushels an acre—a result that will stand any competition from abroad. The lighter lands, which competition may force from the production of wheat, can be very successfully applied to the growingof barley and oats. I am not afraid. ef owr heavy lands being driven from the profitable pro- duction of wheat, and have no doubt that the remainder will find crops ot a remuner- ative description,

Canadian Crops.

The Toronto Globe has given its annual reports of the condition of the staple crops of the Dominion, The general result ob- tained from the reperts is that the harvest as a whole will be by no means equal té the splendid harvests ef the years1877, 1878; i879 and 1880, bat will be superior to that of 1876. ~ The wheat crép ts” the only cereal in which any deficiency is threatened.

The Globe remarks that regarding fall wheat there are 116 reports, in which estimates ranging trom 45 to 120’per cent. of an average crop, are given.” The aver- age of. the whole number is 88, and, that accordingly represents the eonditien of the crop, the figures 100 being supposed to re- present an average. Fail wheat is oon- sequently . indicated to be 12. per cent, be- low the average. if

Spriog wheat is shown by the 108 Te- ports to be in mach better Gndition than the fall wheat, but the conlition of the spring wheat is only 92, being 8 per cent. less than an average crop.

The important spring grains, barley, oats, and peas, all promisé a bountiful yield, and the gcreaze, ag well as the qualily, is far above the average. e average of 114 re- ports concerniug the barley indicate the condition of the crop to he 1u3. The reports concerning potatoes and roots show a very favorable condition of these crops. The yield of potatoes, as attested by 112 reports, is likely to be 6 per cent. above an average crop., crops generally show a present condition of 101, but these crops are wholly dependent upon the weather we may haye for the next three months, and ‘not till September” can their fate be spoken of with certainty.

The Fifth Avenue Company.

The Oomedy of “‘ The Guv’nor” was presented last evening, at the Academy of Music, by this excellent company. ‘‘ The Guv’nor” is one of the lightest, as it is one of the most enjoyable dramatic works which it has ever been our lot to have witnessed. lt is effervescent and cheery. Its humor and hilarity are thoroughly Buglish. It is adinirably constructed. Whatever of plot there is in it isa thread npon which are strnng a crowd ef fanny situations aud of perplexities, in the explanation and un- raveling of which the author has shown the skill of one who.is certainly a master in his vocation,, and @ therough adept in the construction of: that most difficult of all dramatic work-—-a farcical comedy. It never repeats iiself. Every act is a new revelation. of the very extravagance of humor and repartee and of the grotesquerie of eomplizated situations. Above and beyond all, it is clean, and all there is of it is purée and wholesome. So much for the play ; now as to the aetors. The cast is well filled, and there is no part init that is not ably and conscientiously acted. The chief success of lust evening was won by Mr. Lytell, whose acting as the old boat- builder, unrefined to the verge of extravagance, Whose extreme deafness is one of the causes of the numerous blunders, was a capital piece of comedy, at once fin- ished and broad. Mr. Whitecar made a distinet success as the stuttering athlete who is one of the lovers, and he demon- strated his ability as a comelian beyond dispute. Mr. Rvan,as the Yorkshire groom, was ‘perfect. Mr Hawkins was very good as youny Butterscotch, Me. Strong gave an excellent character bit as Jellicoe, the old mischief-maker.. The ladies in the caste have very littleto dy, bit that littl they do well. Miss Earle renders Carrie in a charming ~ girlish manner, and Miss Mortimer, the piquant, was as appetizing as she was as Mrs. Beown on the previous evening. Miss Lanuer showed to excel- lent adventage as the young Mrs Butter- scotch, dressed with excellent taste, and was graceful and lady-like. Miss Graham played Mrs. Macclesfield—the wife of the boat builler—one of those middle-aged Envlish women, of the middle class, excel- lently. The same play will be repeated at the matinee for the accou:modation of ladies and children, and this evening Hazel Kirke will be given, and we hope to see a crowded house,
