This. of course. would have been an excellent sacrifice if East-West could have made their vulnerable slam. but the fact was that West would have had to lose a spade and a club. no matter how he maneouvr- ed. Thus, the "swing" against North-South for taking the unnec- essary sacrifice was 800 points. (Six spades scarcely could have been doubled).

Even this loss could not be fairly assessed against South for his de- cision to overbid six spades. if his position at the table had been diff- erent By that I mean, if South had been the last to speak for his side, it would have been quite rea- sonable for him to reason that the possible 10s§ from letting the six- spade bid stand was greater than the loss that would be suffered at seven hearts. This. however. was not the issue, so for as South was concerned. The salient fact was that North was still to be heard from!
