Trans-Continental Trade.

THe people of Great Britain and the European Continent, are awaiting with interest the completion of the three lines of Railway across the American Con- tinent. These Trans-Continental lines will probably have a marked effect upon trade. Rates of freight must come down ; and consequently consumers in the “ Old Country” contemplate, besides greater despaich, a corresponding reduction in prices. A Liverpool paper of late date says :—

“Information is coming to hand almost every week, which all goes to show that the resources of California, Oregon, and British Columbia are only just beginning to be tapped, and that the supplies already fur- nished to us, enormous as they have been, afford us no adequate idea of what may be had, and certainly will be had thence in the coming years. California sends to us now annually 700,000 tons of wheat and barley, and 700,000 barrels of flour; Oregon sends 160,000 tons; whilst of salmon, in tins, the supply for this year is estimated at 45,000,000 Iba! and the resources are supposed to be practicably inexhaustible. In addition to these staple articles, the region is equally prolific in fruits of various kiods, which only requirreapid means of tran nit to be made equa!ly available on this side of the world. Yet, enormousas these quan- ties now are, we are assured that they are capable of multiplication almost a hundred- fold. It is easy to be seen, therefore, that the increased means of transport will be only like tapping a reservoir. As fast as the means of communication open up, the trade of that region will develop, and it is not unlikely that even when all the four lines of railway across the continent are at work, there will still be room and _ need for transport by ships as well.”’

Geod Character.

The Montreal (Gazette says ‘‘the superlative quality of Canadian spring wheat this year has been acknowledged by an authority in the grain trade in New York, where it has been enquired for by millers at good prices.” The best grades, it is said, would bring $1 22 io that city afloat. It seems that Canadian wheat, both red winter und spring, is in good demaud at New York, owing to their running even in quality and being free from the mixing of inferior qualities with good, which is too common a prac- tice in the States. This shows the ad- vantage of marketing good grain in good order. The Island has lost caste in the foreign markets, because many of our farmers do not take care to clean their grain well.

Queen’s County Jail.

To-day the writer visited Queen’s County Jail for the purpose of enquiring into the wants and requirements of prisoners during the coming winter. We were much surpris- ed on passing through to find that the laage building contained but fourteen prisoners, most of whom are serving short terms. The list of pisoners is made up as follows:

3 Lunatics.

2 Incendiaries.

2 Drunkards.

2 Assailants.

1 Vagrant.

1 Illicit Liquor Seller, 3 Debtors.

The prisoners are amply provided with food and fuel, but are kept in very unclean, dingy cells. ‘The fire-places are, to a cer- tain extent, unsafe, and require immediats repairs. Paint and lime whitewash are much required in all parts of the building, | and a general scrubbing of floors would add 3 much to the freshness of the various cells— particularly those of the basement and first flat.

It is a matter of surprise that the Gov-|

ernment, having in their possession an a! asylum so large as Falconwood, should permit the incarceration of lunatics in the Common Jail. These hapless creatures re- quire treatment which they cannot receive in other places than a lunatic asylum, They require exercise, food and care which they cannot have in a jail, and as long ss they are allowed to remain there, their condition cannot be bettered or their expense to the Guvuvernment

40 years of age, one of the lunatics we refer to, has been imprisoned the past twelve months, for threatening his father’s life, during a dispute. He is not much de- ranged in mind—in fact, the only apparent sign of lunacy is his continual romances abc ut injures d»@ him by his family. A little treatment at Falconwood would, no doubt, be a great benefit tohim. The other lunatics are hopeless cases. One—James Robertson, aged 45, of Lot 48, (afflicted in mind and »body)—has been four years an inmate of the Poor House. Quite recently he became dangerous to his fellow inmates, and was improperly transferred to the jail. He occupies a dark, cold and hadly ventil- ated cell in the basement, where we to- day found him, lying on a mattrass on the floor, shivering and complaining of thirst. More comfortable quarters than the present he does not desire, and he refuses to leave the cold, dark, hideous cell. The other— Johu Munro, aged 30, of Lorne Valley, King’s Co.—was committed for want of sureties to keep the peace. He is very sick now, very often takes tits, and is daily wasting away. The Charity Concert.

Tue first of the Season |! Wehope it will be followed by many others. In this quiet selfish, money-grubbir g, matter of faet com- munity, it is well pe ple should be brought together once in a while, feeling that they are at the same tiu.e giving something to the poor and receiving something which, more than gold, tends to elevate their tastes and refine their natures. The audience was Jarge and various, and the programme was fairly well rendered—though, taken as a whole, the Conceft was not by any means equal to some of those we have had in former years, We are pleased to note that the ranks of our Orchestral Club, which have been thinned by the absence of Mr. William Caven, and others, were filled up, for the occasion at least, by two such musicians as Messrs. Frieze and Norman. The renditions by the Club, though com- paratively simple, were excellent. Rather undue prominence was taken by the first violin, but this could hardly be termed a fault; for the Ciub has not had time to practice much this year. After a little while we shall expect from them a better balance of the different parts, and a higher class of music. The rare power and ability in execution displayed by Miss Bessie Lewis (who made her first appearance last evening) was a delightful surprise to the more appreciative part of the audience. Mr. Vinnicombe’s violin, too, was splendid; and the hearty encore he received showed the pleasure of the audience, The Misses Crabbe and Whear, and Messrs. Davison and Knight, con- tributed several vocal selections which were deservedly well received, though to some Miss Crabbe seemed to disappoint her early promise; and it is but right to explain that she does not enjoy her usual good health Messrs. Reed and Maynard gave the Minute Gun at Sea, and were warmly encored. Miss K Hensley and Miss H. | Dunn sung pretty songs very sweetly, and | Mr. Cant, (whom we are glad to welcome), showed that he has a fine vice, well culti vated, but scarcely strong enough for ‘Scots wha hae” in the Y. M. C. A. Hall | Miss Palmer’s rendition of ‘‘Sweet Angelus | is ringing” was delightful to all preseat who love and appreciate good music; and we sincerely trust that nothing may occur to prevent this talented artist and lady from | repeating her fine efforts throughout the | coming winter. Mr. Norman’s accompani- | ment to ‘*The Lost Chord” which he sang, | was rather too heavy for his voice, though his voice is unusually fine, and powerful. |

A public meeting was held at Murray Harbor Road last evening. Just twenty Legislative Council Electors were present. Tur laborers at Chatham have formed an organization and, asa result they have -been enabled to secure $3.50 per day during the past summer for loading steamers. _ At New- castle there is no organization, the wages is $1.00 lower, But the Chatham organization is meeting with difficulties.
