In the process cf manufacturirg the new fabric the principal ingredients used cre sprucewood pulp, cotton or jute waste, ete., combined with a large quantity of alcohol. ‘fhe use of the sub- stantial or solid materials mentioned creates a market for what was hitherto of no use whatever, b-ing burned in factory furnaccs to get it out of the way.

Spruce sawdust now has a market value, for this, as wel! as the other ma- terials, are digested by a chemical pro- cess in which alcohol plays an import- ant part. The material thus digested is £0 much like the cocoon spun by the silkworm that when the two are placed side by side in a finished state it takes an expert to determine which is which.

The artificial mate:ial at cne state fs in a liquid state, and of a density about equal to the cniinary s~rup of commerce. When in this state a ma- chine of Dr. Lehner’s invention, which may be called an artificial s.lkworm, comes into play. This machine, which is very simple in construction, requiring 80 little attention that it can be kept at work with about as much labor as is devoted to a twenty-four hour clock, performs exactly the same mechanical work that a silkworm does. It draws from the liquid a continuous unbroken thread of eve. diameter and unlimited length. As this thread is spun another portion of the machine takes it up ard twists it into any desired thickness of yarn with perfect regularity.

Thus the fabric can be made of any desired weight or thickness, so that it will be seasonable at all times.

This art ficial silk has becn spun in Bradford, England, and worked up into a large variety of fabrica. In the dying, weaving and finishing of these no special treatment has teen found necessary. It has been dyed in all im- aginable shadcs and colors, and owing to the peculiar qualities of the materiel it takes a dye more readily and gives a more brilliant effect than the natural article. We find members of this order in part of the globe, in places as far apart from each other as they can be, It is the prevailing and dominant order of vegetable life, the most highly finished and the most successful family of plants. And the dandelion is one of the most perfect f.rms belonging to it.

Scientific Uses of Liguid Air.

In a recent lect r: on the 8 1 ntive uses of liquid air Profe.sor Dewar froze a soap bubble by m ans of the intense cold produced near the surface of liquid air. The same effect, however, was ob- tained by Mr. lim by natural cold in Colorado last winter, when the ther- mometer st. ol at 14 degrecs below zero, Fabrenhe t, that is to say at 46 degrees of frost. Acting on the suggestion of his little toy, who was blowing soap bubbles, he sent one into the cold air outside. It froze instantly, and settled to the ground as a hollow shell of ice. When the the:mometer rose to zero, the bubbles would not freeze, but whe- ther th’'s was owing to the change of temperature or some other condition of the air Mv. Applied to Our Food According to the Rules of Health.

In the domestic training of our girls we must not overlcok this one import- ant thought of economy. It should not come on the best of important things as a secondary consideration. By economy we do not mean the purchasing of cheap food or stinting in the quantity. It ‘s simply extravagant and profitless to look around for cheap eatables. The economy consists in purchasing the most nourishing fcod and preparing it in the most palatable and proper man- rer, not wasting what might be left over at each meal, It certa.nly will require some thought and t.-me, but it can be done easily by makirg use of th? hints and receipts that are acccssible to all. It is these littl> «dd concomitants that make our bill of fare eke out. Yet we must urge that it cannot be done to satisfaction unless judgment and common-sense are used. This we can- not impart to the hous*keeper or c_o™. It is not a natural giit, thn by al means it must be cultivated in order to be a successful cook ard economis’. “Wilful waste brings woeful want,’ is an old adage with whi-h all are fa- miliar and the very quintessence of truth. It is not the greatest quantity we consume that nourishes, but ouly what we digest. If we would but con- sider this more s:riously there would not be in the world so many dyspeptics.

Too much thought or time cannot b= expended on this last great truth, that *tis not quantity, but quality we need. Variety, too, must be seriously consid- ered. To sit down to meal after meal of the same things is tircsome; our na- tures require a change in this partic- ular as well as in other things.

We may just now say a few words in favor of the pinzappie, one of the most delicious fruits we can have. Yet how often we hear it asserted that it is tco indigestible to ca*. The resson of this, too, is because it is not properly prepared. To put it before human be- ings cut in sli es we consider a crime, for thus prepared the very hard and in- digestible core is eaten, which cannot be digested any more than a piece of leather.
