Consumer Price Index Declines

OTTAWA ICPi — Canada’s consumer price index declined slightly during A u gu st, due mainly in lower food prices. it was the second consecuuve monthly drop.

At the start of September the index was 1.6-per-cent higher than a year earlier. In approx- lmately the same period the tn- dex of industrial wages and lil< aries rnse about 3.9 per cent.

The bureau of statistics on Tuesday placed the latest price index —- based on 1949 prices equalling 100—at 135.6 on about Sept. 1 compared with 136.1 I month earlier. 136.2 on July 1 and 133.4 on Sept. 1 last year

The industrial wages index for the last week of July - latest figure available — stood at 201.9 against 201.6 a month earlier and 194.0 a year earlier. That index also is based on 1949 conditions equalling 100.
