Gotrgy Dvecks—Mr. John Davis, New England Settlement, Stewiacke, N.S., recent+ ly kilied a number of ducks, and, on dressing them, found in the crop of one fifteen par- ticles of gold, which were valued in Halifax at one dollar. A neighbor had a similar experi- ence in the same line. The feeding ground of the ducks had been in a small stream, the rocky bed and sides of which had more than once tesn suspected of containing the precious metal.
Bisuop DoaNe exhorted the clergy at a Diescesan Convention of Protestant Kpiscopal- ians at Troy recently against early marriages. He contended that they impair the clergy- mar:.'s usefulness by distracting his attention during a period when concentration of mind upon the details of his religious charge is most needful. And he condemned them because they encourage an ambition for stations which neither his experience nor capacity qualify him to fill, in order to acquire better emolu- ments for family support. The Bishop's sen- timents are variously commented upon in United States journals. The arguments he employed are consided new, in at least Pro- testant circles, and seem to be largely lacking in popularity.
Tus Mrircagii-Bowsrs Cass.—The atten- tien of the Supreme 'ourt was called te-day to a report in ‘he Examiner on Saturday, in the case of Mitchell vs. Bowers. The defend- ent’s counsel complained that the statement of the case, as given by the EXAMINER, was one-sided and unfair. We de not think it was so, but if the facts were not fully stated any omission was unintended. It took Mitchell’s counsel nearly half an hour to state the pleadings to the Judge, and we reported the pleas as fully as we understood them. The defendant's counsel stated that the Examiner was ‘‘bitterly hostile ~~ We are certainly politically opposed to Mr. Bowers, but so farasthe ease of Mitchell vs. Bowers is concerned, we are perfectly indifferent. We are absolutely without feeling one way or the other. We trust that whoever is entitled to. judgment will recover judgment, and we should be sorry if anything we have said should be deemed an interference with the administration of justice or prejudice Mr.

Cable specials from Londen say that the Queen’s Soeech is expected to recommend several important measures. <A proposal to abolish primegenitnre and facilitate the sale of lards, with a bill to permit life ten- ants to dispose of their interest, will un- doubtedly be brought forward, relying on the peers-:o reject the bills. Relief imeas- ures are to be promised to Ireland. The criminal code will receive a prominent place in the ministerial programme. An an- nouncemeat is expected that the British ferces wil] retire from Afghanistan, after crushing «military resistance, and recogniz- ing some native ruler—bnt returning a suf- ficient froutier.
The Irish members proclaim their inten- tion to oppose an address in.reply te the Queen’s Speech. The Ministry hopes to counterac: this by sympathetic declarations regarding the Irish distress, accompanied by promises of substantial relief.
Ministe: Lowell is expected in London in a fortnight when he will have an audience with the Queen at Osborne. He will then return to» Madrid and fetch hia wife, whose heslth, after eight months severe illness,is daily mending. She will prob- ably be unable to leave the London climate. Mr. Lowell intends tu find a suitable sea- side place for her, perhaps the Isle of Wight.

Wiliam H. Mitchell vs. Patrick R. Bowers, After the little breeze in reference to the EXAMINEF was over this morning, Mr. John Lawson of the Patriot, Mr. Joseph W. Mitchell sf the Examiner, and Mr. James Byrne, C. C., were examined on behalf of the plaintiff. The case is slowly dragging its weary lenzth along, and there is every pros- pect of a long and tedious trial.
A savae custom, unknown at the Poly- technic, ht practised at St. Cyr and some other pul-lic schools in France, has led to a shocking death at the Ecole des Arts et Metiers cf Angers, and has demoralized the whole school. An obnoxious student, and sometimes for mere fun a freshman, is con- demned te an unlimited hustling and kick- ing. Four Inds, sentenced by their com- rades to this rough treatment, were shut up in a dark room. Two escaped, and their

>on the two remaining. One named Guyot ‘is dead, and the other is in hospital. It has been attempted to explain that Guyot met his ‘leath by being aecidentally jam- med between two tables, but his whele tbody was found covered with contusions [tom blows and kicks.
