From all sections of the Province the intel- ligence is received of a plentiful crop of pota- toes, This abundant yield, in some instances ever four hundred bushels to the acre, is also reported in most sections entirely, and in other places nearly, free from disease. The fine weather of the past few weeks has enabled producers to gather and store their crop in the best possible condition. Beyond a doubt our votato product is greatly beyond the amount needed for home consumption, leaving a large quantity for exportation. It is greatly to be hoped that the experiment of shipment to England now being tried may succeed, and thus afford our farmers remunerative prices.

Lord Salisbury made a speech at a ban- quet to-night, in which he remarked that \the Opposition leaders after attacking his jcircular in reply to the San Stefano treaty, ‘and after having permitted Mr. Gladstone ‘to expend the limited resources of his ‘sophistry upon it, had now veered round ‘and asserted that the Government had not acted to the circular by opposing Russia. {Lord Salisbury recapitulated and justified the policy of the Government point by ipoint, strong hospitality to Russia being lvery noticeable throughout his remarks. \In regartl to the fact .that Turkey had not vcenpied the Balkans he said: “Inthe pres- ent state of the Russsian Empire, Turkey has no reason to expect laggressions. The badness of the Gov- ernment of Turkey or any other coun- try would never justify us in handing jover great strategetic positions to any power whose aggressions thréathen the happiness and independence of the world ; but there are other points of the Treaty of Berlin besides the occupation of the Balkans. If you do not trust a Turkish sentinel on the ramparts, you may trust an Austrian -sentinel at the door. Since the occupation of Novi Bazaar, the advance of the Russians beyond the Balkans and the Danube is impossible. In the independence and strength of Austria rests the last hope of European stability. If the assertion of the newspapers, that a defensive alliance be- tween Austria and Germany, proves to be true, all who value the peace of Europe will hail it as glad tidings of great joy.

The committee of the Federal Council of Foreign affairs met in Berlin on Thursday. The event is unusual. Special correspond- ents conjecture that the Government had something important to communicate con- cerning negotiations with the Vatican or relations with foreign Powers.
