A Tale of the Sea,
Captain Clark, of the American ship frank N. Thayer, arrived at Plymouth, Eng., on the Cape steamer, by which he | way picked up atsea. He relates that) the Thayer, was bound for New York} with a mixed crew, including two Mauilla seamen. These two men stole | upon deck one night, and armed with | knives lashed to poles, attacked two officers, killing them instenily. Three sailors, the only ones on deck, were then quickly despatched. Capt. Clark, hearing the shrieks of the crew rushed
on deck in his night shirt. The Manillans slashed him terribly, and he barely escaped with his life. After a desperate struggle, he broke away from his assailants, and rushing to his cabin, he locked himself in. The Manillans battened down the hatches
and kept the captain and crew below deck one day and night. The captain finally fired through a skylight at one of the mutineers and wounded him in the thigh. ‘The man rushed to the side of the vessel and leaped overboard.
The other mutineer then went below and fired the cargo, and returning to the deck, jamped into the sea. Terri-
fied with madness, the crew forced their way on deck, lowered a boat and rowed away. The ship was~consumed,, »The crew wandered at sea for a week before they were picked up.

Rev. Abbott C. Kettridge, pastor ot the third Presbyterian Church,Chicago, recently delivered a sermon in which he made an extraordinary attack on the administration of justice and the supposed immoralties of Chicago. Our wives, he said, are not safe from the hands of the thief, on the principal streets in broad daylight; garroting is an event ofevery night; burglars ply their nefarious busivess with little fear of arrest ; our police courts, with a few exceptions area burning disgrace to any civilized community ; many of our justices are in open league with the criminals, their decisions are and sold, and men who have been en- trusted with the high duty of enforcing the law are hand in hand with the criminal classes ; their ermine robes are covered with the filth of corruption,and it is well nigh an imp ssibility for one
to gain an honest judgment. The majority of our aldermen, he said, are
