The letters were written in the evening, and contained the intelligence that on the morn- ing Qfthat day, the Russians invested Kars on all sides in full force. The batteries at Kors opened :1 murderous ﬁre on the be- sit-gers. Three times did the Russians gain it footing in the Turkish intrenchments —antl three times were they driven out by the Turks at the point of the bayonet. Colonel Lake distinguished himself in the contest, not only by his courage, but by his skill. It was he who drove the enemy frotn the Inglis Tahia. KARS, Ocr. l.—Here I am on the Caradagh again, none the worse for my late illness. Last night the Russians at- tacked us in force, and (between you and me and tho post)very nearly took Kars. The ﬁght was a most bloody one, and lasted seven hours and a half, without one sccond’s intermission. The Russians left upwards of ‘.3000 men dead on the ﬁeld; and their loss in killed, wonnded, and prisoners must have exceeded 6000 men. VVhat do you think of us Kars chaps after that? I was not actively engaged, as they knew better than to attack my almost impregnnble bat- tery a second time; but I did great service with my heavy guns, and twice drove them out ofa battery they had taken, and turned upon us. It was a nasty sight—the ficl'd— afterwards. It was completely covered with dead bodies, mostly Russians, as our men did not lose more than live or six hur.d.‘=.-d altogether. This evening I saw a letter written by a Bey of Livana (Turkish Georgia). Ilc says that Omar Pacha having concentrated hishtroops in Churuksu, had m'.l.l‘CllC(.l on Urzughet, and that he had made himself master of the place without much difﬁculty. He received there a deputation from the Georgian nobility who tnade their submis- sion to the Porte in the name of the inhabi- tants of the district. According to this let- ter Omar Pacha was marching toward Akaltzick, for the purpose of making a diversion in favour of Kars, and of tllli- mately coming to the assistance ofthat city. This last news tallies with that contained in letters received the day before yesterday, which say. that Omar l’.'tcl1a has communi- cated with the Muchir in hers, tolling hitu to maintain his position for twenty days, at the expiration of which he would he at Kars with his army. Sir Hamilton Seymour, late Ambassador at St. Petersburg, is named as likely to succeed Lord Westmoreland as Ambassa- dor at Vienna. The name of Earl Gran- ville is also mentioned.

It is rumoured at Manchester that eforo the re-assembling of parliament, Mr. Bright, M. P., intends to meet his constituents in public, when doubtless the war question will be hotly debated. '

Nsvv.-— There has been an unusual mortality amongst the higher class of naval otliccrs lately, upwards of twenty admiral: having died this year.

Numbers of military oﬁiccrs on sick leave in Ireland have received orders to proceed instantly to the Crimea. Several of the gen- lemen had to leave without their luggage.
