John Crozier, compositor, Toronto,who is the Neeretary of the trade society there, las fled the town with $115, the money of the association. Tho culprit had a capital character, but when it was found that he was to the bad in his accounts enquiries were set oa foot, and it was then scen that although he was a married man with four children, a church menm- ber and Sunday~school superinteudeut,he had takea a house for another woman with whom he had been cohabiting under the pame of Andersen. It was to keep on this second establishment that the robbery was committed. Further inves- tigation showed the scamp had induced his age mother to give him power over $450 she had in a bank, and this he ap- propriated ; then he gota Mr. McNab to endorse a note for him for $59, telling him he had lost the money of the soctoty and wished to make it good ; afterwards he borrowed $20 from a fellow workman, and is now suspected of having robbed another of $35. Besides getting hoid of this chash ($635) he bas left somewhere about $100 to be paid at some other ime while his family are destitute. Wheo asked by his friend who had seen him go to his paramour’s house what he went for, he replied that lady was ill and he had been asked by the pastor of the church to visit her. She says she does not know where Crozier is gone to. It is stated that he is about 35 years of age, red whiskers and five feet seven or cight high Printers in the country are warned against him.

The Octawa Citizen says the Customs Department are taking active measures to put an end to merchants entering goods uoder value. In one case in that city they have confiscated a large consignment of glassware, aud in addition to this, im— posed a fine of $200. The same firm is also iv trouble with the Inland Revenue Department for a violation of the Jaw as regards the standard of coal oil. Two barrels of the illuminating fluil, which do not stand the test, have been confiscated.

The Alpha, the pioneer steamer of the new line between Yarmouth and the West Indies, sailed from the former port Thurs- day last for Bermuda, St. Thomas, Ss. Kitts, etc. She had a fall cargoe of pro- duce and various articles of merchandise, comprising io all about 2,500 barrels,and 26 passengers. Mr. BE. F. Clements, her owner, also took passage to arrange the business of the line in the various ports at which she willeall. Much interest is tuken io Yarmouth and other places in this new enterprise.

A recent inveator claims to be able to make hard wood lumber from common wheat straw. The straw is first made into a pulp and then into ordinary paste- board. As many of these sheets are tuken as required to make the thickness of lum ber, desired, and then are passed through a chemical solution, the composition of which is not stated, and afterwards the sheets are passed through rollers and the hard lumber, imperviousto water, comes out ready for use.
