The Lake Erie hearings grew out of concern by conservation- ists that the Great Lakes are dying, victims of raw se aie dumped into them.

Out of the hearings came a recommendation that no munici- pality should construct combina- tion storm and sanitary sewers.

“During a storm the volume of water through a combination sewer will coarinia a treatment plant, and raw sewage gets dumped. into a lake or stream,” Stein said.

Another major result of the hearings was passage Oct. 2 of an amendment to the federal
