rue personel ministry is such as to reassure those who feared that, apart from Ireland, a very radical policy would be pursued: It was

reported that Lord Rosebery had declined to accept the office of Foreign Secretary. Everyone interested in the continuance of a steady British foreign policy will be glad to learn that the report was not true. The presence in the cabinet of Lord Rosebery js also a guarantee that the objects of the Imperial Federation League will not be everlooked, The expectation that John Morely would be appointed Chief Secretary for Ireland has been met. There can, con- sequently, be be no doubt that Irish affairs will be carefully and ably administered and that the Irish Home Rule Bill will be dexterovsly handled in Parliament, even should the infirmities of age necessitate the absence of the Grand Old Man him- selt. A list of Cabinet officers which in- cludes, besides the distinguished men al- ready mentioned, Sir William Vernon Har- court, as Chancellor of the Exchequer, Earl Spencer as First Lord of the Admiralty, H. Campbell Bannerman as Secretary of War, Sir Charles Russell as Attorney General, may well be regarded with satis- faction by the British public. Great ques- tions of Home and Foreign policy—ques- tions which will fully test the ability ot the new administration—are at once to be

deait with. it will not be long ere the new Government may be judged by its record.

The Flower Show

WHILE we cannot apply the term *‘large”’ to the exhibit of Flowers shown in the Ex- hibition Building today, on the occasion of the Flower Show held under the direction of the Driving Park Association, yet it cannot be said that the show is pot a credit- able one. The display looks dwarfed of course by being exhibited in such a large building, but a close examination of the different plants and groups of flowers will take one a good while to complete, and prove a most interesting study.

Without a doubt hundreds of people might have entered flowers for com- petition who did nut. Nowhere can flowers —that is hardy and half hardy annualse— be grown with greater success than in our island climate, while all the old hardy garden perennials and summer flewering bulbs can be easily grown and beautiful flowers procured. We are sure that as soon as the flower show becomes recogniz- ed as a regularly recurring annual event, the exhibition of flowers by Island lovers of floriculture will be one that can- not be surpassed by any Province in Canada,

Of the flowersshown, however, it is hard to say which deserve most mention. There was a magnificent display of lilies and foliage plants, comprising coleus, begonia rex, maidenhair and other ferns, asparagus plumosus, besides dracenas, &c., made by Mr. G. H. Haszard, but one could not fail to admire the collection of Island wild plants and flowers, so charmingly grouped together in picturesque disurder. These wiid flowers of the Garden of the Gulf are 4 beautiful study in themselves.

Coming to the cultivated plants, we noticed particularly an enormous begonia rex, two immense hydrangeas, a large oleander, well in flower, a finely-grown tea rose, besides some very good fuschias. The show of geraniums was most disappointing, considering what a general favorite this well-known flower is and how easily it is grown. There was only one gloxinia that we could see, in a small pot, but it had two very pretty flowers. There were some cut blossoms of scabiosa of most beautiful varieties. Some double dahlias were most remarkably marked and quite a novelty. The hollyhocks, sweet peas, nas turtiums phlox aod pansies were all very good though not very much variety was shown, Of gladioli some very well grown specimens wore shown, though there was not much variety in color, The carnations exhibited were not bad, but did not appear to b> as well grown as might be.

It would not do to pass over the excellent specimens of tuberous begoni s, in fail fl wer, which attracted admiration from all. As to the hoquets exhibited, some were good and some were not. A great mistake seems to be made in not using pienty of green When mak- ing up flowers in:o boquets, for there can be no comparison between bunches of flowers in which green is liberally used and in those composed entirely of blossems.

There is a good display of small fruits, amongst which are some very large red cur- rants. In particular we noiiced a very large specimen of blackberry, displayed for greater effect on the top of a plste of red currants.

The Races.

Tue races were called at 2 o'clock. The track was in excellent condition. The at- tendance of spectators was small. The officers of the track were :—

Judges—J. J. Davies, Charlottetown (starter); Mr. Jewett, St. John; James McLeod, Summerside.

Distance Judge—Philip I. McMahon, Charlottetown.

Timers—Geo, W. Hibbett, Georgetown; W. A, Brennan, Summerside.

Clerk —C. E. McKinnon, Charlottetown.

The first event on the programme was the race for yearlings. The starters were Brighton Boy, by All Right, C. Dorken-

dorff, North River; Hatasu, by Golden, Milford Farm, Charlottetown; Lucy Lee, by All Right, John Canning,

Hope Rivhr ; Edith L, by Brilliant, A. N. Large, Ch’town.

First Heat—They got a good send off on the first score, Edith L. having the pole. At the first turn Hatasu forged ahead, but broke, and was passed by Brighton Boy, with Edith L. third and Lucy Lee fourth. Before the quarter was reached Brighton Boy, who had settled down agsin passed Hatsu and took the lead- which he held to the finish, trotting in ex, cellent form. Hatsu took second place, with Edith D third, and Lucy Lee fourth. Time, 1 31}.

The first heat of the three-minute class was next called. The starters were : Yellowbird, by Dean Swift, N Lee, Truro, N S; Parnell, by Abdallah, P P Gillis, Ch’town; Birdie Pathen, by Royal Harry, Dr J T Jen- kins, Upon Farm; Lderim, by Olympus, P S Brown, Ch’'town; Sim, by McMillan’s Harry, W S McKie, Ch’town; Sam Slick, by Uncle Sim, Peter Carroll, Pictou, N S. They were sent off on the seventh score. Ilderin led at the start, but was soon passed by Sam Slick, who keld the lead until just after passing the } pole, when he was given the ‘‘goeby” Ilderim, who pressed him hard after passiog the half. Ild- erim maintained the lead to tho finish with Sam second, Sam Slick third, Yellow Bird fourth, Birdie Pathea fifth,and Parnell sixth. Iiderim was set back tc fourth place for rune ning. No time given.

Second Heat—The seccnd heat in the yearling race came next. The horses were sent offon the second score. Brighton Boy, who had the pole, took the lead at the start and maintained it to the finish, winning easily. Hatasu took second place, with Lucy Lee third and Edith L. fourth, all three pretty well bunched. Bric hton Boy’s time was 1.28, lowering the Mantime record 7 seconds. eimai ins elief for St. John’s.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR.

Eggs and @Gaits.

Sir,--Below you will find a statement of the exports, both maritime and foreign, from Queen’s and King’s County from the Ist April to 30th December, 1891.

I have not got the figures for Prince County, but 1 am pretty sure that the ex- ports from that county, particularly in oats, will be heavier than either of the above- named counties, and that potatoes and eggs would be about the same as Queen’s.

Another thing to be considered is that masters of vessels sailing under coasting licenses are not required in clearing at any Canadian port to report what cargo they carry, unless goods in bond, so that a con- siderable quantity of our exports cannot be accounted for :
