Quick Trme.-—The brigt. ‘‘ Quango,” on a recent trip, made the run from Canso to Demerara, South America, in thirteen days. This is ene of the quickest, if net the quickest, passages on record. fi Tue election in North Lanark has resulted in the return of the Opposition candidate by a not very large majority. North Lanark has been a Grit stronghold for years.— Mr. Galbraith, the late member was elected there by acclamation, fer three consecutive elections. At the last general election he was however too confident, and the then opposition came with- in 43 of defeating him. At the General Local Election last June the Grit candidate (Mr. Caldwell) was returned by the large majority of 282.

Mr. B. Devlin, ex-M. P., who was oblig- ed to sojourn in Colorado for his health, is so far restored that he is on his way home.

The demand of the cotton operatives at Bolton for 10 per cent. increase in wages has been compromised, the masters promis- ing a future advance if the improvement in trade continues.

Born unpeR PecuLiaR CIRCUMSTANCES. —On Saturday afternoon while the 4:20 express from Halifax for St. John was awaiting the arriva! at this Station of the English mail train, a fine young male child was born of one of the passengers under circumstances somewhat novel. The pas- senger, named Eva Fawcett, who had form- erly been at service in Moncton, but has lately lived in Amherst, retired to the pri- vate apartments in one end of the car and gave birth to the child, which was a min- ute or two afterwards found by the officials lying beside the rail on the snow. The child was carried to the Dining Hall. The girl, who had returned to her seat in the ear, at first denied that the child was hers, but afterwards confessed. The infant so strangely born was taken to a house in town, and medical attendance provided. [t is now alive and well. No action was taken against the mother.—It is unneces- sary to say that the startling and disgust- ing occurrence created no little excitement among those who were witnesses of it.— The girl was on her way to Petitcodiac.— Moncton Times.

K hereby inform the pub- lic of this city, and the

to Stock-taking, we have re- solved to clear out as much of our Winter Stock as possible. We are aware that at this season it is hard to get people to buy even at reduced prices; but in the face of this difficulty we have made up our mind to adopt full measures, and sell our Wool Goods and Dress Goods at a sacrifice.

Our Goods have been very cheap all winter, as the run of trade we have had fully testifies. Our store has become the resort of those Ladies who know how tomake a penny go a long way, and who know a cheap article when they see it; and when we say we are going to reduce the prices of our Dress Goods and Trimmings, we know we shall be believed. We are particul- arly anxious to clear out our present Stock, in order to intro- duce as much of the newest style of Dress Material as possible, and at the very lowest prices. We shall make special prices on Black Cashmeres, Black Meri- nos, Black Cords and Lustres, Lustrines and Brilliantines.

Our Fancy Wool Goods will be sold at less than cost. Our Stock of this class was the larg- est, most select, and finest in the city, and the remains of it will be sold at a great sacrifice.
