Among the prisoners taken by the Un- jon troops st the time Pickett made his great charge at Gettysburz was a Virginia serzeant. He wasu Muson. Captain John A. Kellogg of the Sixth Wisconsin gave him a drink of something reviving from bis canteen and put some rations in his empty haversack. ‘Their parting was thet ef brothers.

In December, 1864, when Kellogg was a colone! commanding his regiment, I ac companied him on a ride along the picket line a few miles to the left of Petersburg. By some means, and without knowing it, we got between the picket lines. We were brought toa halt suddenly by the foliow- ing unmilitary salutation:

“Is that you, Captain Kellogg?’’

Looking up, and about two rods to the right, we saw a Heutenant and a dozen men in gray who had appsrently just taken their arms in preparation for serious business.

‘‘That’s my bame, sir,’’ answercd the colonel.

‘‘Beg pardon, Colenel Kellogg. You were a captain at Gettysburg. Allow me to extend congratulations upom your pro- motion.’’

It was beconiing interesting, and both of us were making plans for a shooting match between a dozen Johnny pickets with guns in thelr hands and two officers who had only revolyers, and they notin hand.

‘‘Guess you don’t remember me, colo- wel." ,

“‘T guess that is so,’’ said Kellogg, and he was more bervous than I ever sc w him in battle.

‘I’m the sergeant you gave a nip from your canteen and whose haversack you filled at Gettysburg. They have made me & lieutenant since then. a visit with you, but the officer of the day is due here. Guess you had better get back to your lines.’’

HUNGER AS A MOTIVE.

It Is One of the Mainsprings of Progress In Human Affairs. ;

The rowels of nature's most powerful spur, hunger, are continually reddening the flanks of the primitive community. The apostle’s scathing arraignment of the Cretans, ‘‘ whose god is their belly,’’ would literally apply to every savage tribe and many a civilized one. Hunger is one of the mainsprings.,f pregresa. Jn its honor the net was woven, the hoe was made and thesoil broken, To appease its cravings the wild bull is broken to the yoke, the forests are felled, the ditch is dug through the snarsh.

On its errands the ship is launched on the perilous deep and the band sent cut upon the warpath. Into its service have been impressed the winds of heaven, the steam wreaths of the ca)iron and the glit- tering shafts of the lightning. It is the real Aladdin's lamp of civilization. The ceaseless westward flow of the human stream and the march of the ‘‘star of em-

J pire’ have been at the behest of its genii.

Whether it be born of a barren soil and a cruel sky or of the pressure of overpopula- tion, it has played a leading part in mold- ing the destinies of the nations.

In the fall of every world empire from Assyria to Rome the conquering race has invariably come from the mountainous or barren land, or from a sterner sky.

And still today the nations of the bleak- est belt of the temperate zone, where the struggle with soil and climate is severest, the Scotch, the English, the Dutch and the North Germans, are overrunning the whole of the inhabitable globe and bid fair to far outdo Alexander by more peace- able and far more stable means. — Monist.

Proceedings Against a Pig.

Theanimal which most frequently came before the criminal courts was the pig. At Mesnil St. Denis, near Paris, there still exists a spot called Truye Pendue, after a sow which was once hanged there for kill- ing an infant, and about 20 similar cases are recorded in France alone by different writers. Thus in 1386 the magis- trates of Falaise condemned a pig to have its snout and one leg cut off and then to be hanged for having killed an infant and eaten part of its face andarm. The pig was executed in the market place dressed in human apparel, and the executioner re- ceived ten deniers and a new glove as his fee.

The following isthe statement of ex- penses sent to the bailiff of Mantes in March, 1403, for the exegution of a sow which had killed a baby:
