Other announcers KNOW one team and have a hard time keeping track of the opp-r onent.Bob may do Inter— collegiate one night, a Junior A game the next and two other Junior A teams the next. It is our impression that, in a healthy sort of com— petition here, Gary Heald's charges are set on a real attempt to take the play from Jack Kane's hockey team and make basketball the favourite sport on the

campus. Certainly, since his arrival

game has enjoyed a much greater interest than pre- viously. It may come as a surprise to some that the game WAS NOT invented by Gary but by’a Canadian, James Naismith in 1891.

This makes it the latest major sport to be devised ...leaving out such oddities as roller derbies and mara— thon dancing...a recent magazine article attributed the game's popularity to the fact that all that is needed, in the way of eq- uipment, is two boards,

two hoops and a;ball. We reject the opinion of some wag, looking over my shoul- der, who commented that U. P.E.I. has just these basic

The University of Prince Edward Island Athletic Dep- artment takes great pleas- ure in announcing the re- ceipiants of the Panther Booster Club Bursaries for the fall season. 7

There are three bursaries in all and Shane Dowling of Charlottetown, Blain Mac Pherson of Wiltshire and Colin Anderson of Montreal, Quebec were the players chosen to receive them.

Shane Dowling was an all- star running back at Col- onel Gray High School but was shifted to linebacker in his Freshman season at

U.P.E.I. He enjoyed a fine season and he is being counted on very heavily * this year.

Blain MacPherson, an all- star on both offense and defense at Charlottetown Rural High School, was switched to_genter last year and did an outstand- ing job. He will be the center again this year and that is one position

which should be solid.

Colin Anderson, a Fresh— man, comes to U.P.E.I. as one of the top quarter- backs in all of Quebec. Before arriving,Colin, was at the helm of the Verdun Maple Leafs of the Quebec— Ontario Junior league where he led his team to a first place 4—1 record. Colin is a fine passer and all of the Panther followers have high hopes for him.

News Bulletin: We are now- able to insert that our soccer team had three good. 5halves out of the four 'played over the weekend and salvaged one tie out of two ‘contests. On Friday, in Fredericton, they held UNB to a 0-0 score in a game which, we are told, the score is a good indication of the play. On Saturday, they held off a rampaging Mount A team, in Sackville, to a scoreless tie at the half only to have the roof fall in during the final period in which the Moun- ties scored four times.
