SCOTT ACT MEETING IN GRACE CHURCH LAST NIGHT.
The Rev. W. J. Kirby presided at the meeting last night in Grace Church and ministers of the city were on the platform Afier praver and the reading of the Scriptures, Mr. F. S. Spence was intro- duced and delivered another of his exc el- lent aldreases, He referred tothe fact that the temperance people did not bring on this fight, but were now on the defen- sive. The attack is from the liquor element, andtheir reason is because the Scott Act makes it hard to get the boys, and the business can po more be run with- out the boys than a steam engine can run without wood or coal. Ot all his acquaint- ances in Toronto he could pot remember one family which had not suffered to some degree frow this curse. A good deal is said about Britisi liberty —but the liquor sellers want more thao this. British liberty means liberty to do what is right, and legislation for what, is wrong. A man is at liberty to do what be pleases, as long as he pleases to do what is right A man’s liberty to swing his arm goes just as far as his arm does not come in contact with his neighbor's nose. A good deal had been said about the grain grownio Canada for whiskey making, but upon ap investigation it Was found that whiskey was made from coru and that Was imported trom the States. The refuse of the hogs are fed and sold to Eng- lishmen, and the liquor makes hogs of Canadians, In Canada: the annual con- sumption of liquor per head is four and one-half gailon-; in the States, 17 gallons; in Great Britain 30 gallons; in Germany, 32 gallons. Ocher Europan nations drisk as much as Great Britain. In Caneds we drink less than one quarter of the amounts consumed by the soberest vaticn.
